With your spinal issues, maybe @BackScience would be a good fit? They are in LA, so you could try them out in person. They also have a nice Labor Day sale going on. The mattress has great cooling tech, and can have split firmnesses if needed.
I just thought I would chime in here and let you know that I would be happy to personally go over some great options for you if you are interested in coming out to our Agoura Hills, CA flagship store. Back Science is a very unique mattress in both its feel and specially designed back support system, so it may be that perfect fit for you. You can reach out to us via this discussion or feel free to visit the www.backscience.com site if you want to get more info on the mattress. You can also use the extra 10% off code we offer to TMU members.
Ok update!
I went to Vispring today in LA. The Coronet with the topper you got and I tried the tiara $$$$!!! Which was awesome. Without the topper I wasn’t sure if the coronet felt too bouncy? Both were solid, one nearly double the price of the other because of double coil layer. They recommend medium firmness for me.
I also went to custom comfort and the leader over there for me was the Calistoga with the estate topper.
I still need to go to Duxiana but ran out of time. I’m not sure where else to check but I definitely did NOT like the feeling of the latex only mattress at custom comfort and their innerspring mattress felt quite firm, even with a topper. I sleep a lot on my side and was concerned about pressure points. The Calistoga was a comfort coil of some sort that’s individually wrapped.
Does anyone know how these two might compare? Also other advice welcome!
I’m sure at Vispring they spoke to you about the different tensions, so if you want a little more ‘give’ for pressure points, the medium should help. The fact that the coils are individually pocketed on a Vispring helps with the mattress contouring to fit you, and the topper will also help, as well as lengthening the life of your mattress.
Good luck!
I went to Duxiana yesterday and got pricing. They recently changed their line which they’ve apparently never really done. They’ve replaced materials with all natural vs blend and modified the layers. I received estimates for King sized beds we looked at:
Dux 30 (rigid interior hardwood frame which is 16” high) and Dux 31 (more like an American mattress with no rigid frame and 15.5” high) and both quoted at $12,345. Both have the Pascal cassette system which was interesting.
My husband and I both agreed this wasn’t the mattress for us. Also to note they have a no return policy, 15 year warranty and no sleep trial. We tried the basic model but there was a considerable amount of motion transfer. Apparently one of the modifications to the new line was to reduce the motion transfer but it definitely still was … bouncy? When my husband rolled over I definitely felt it.
Hope this helps re: Dux!
Hi! I brought my husband into Vispring yesterday and he didn’t like the models that were my top two: the Tiara and the Coronet, both with Opulence topper. Interestingly, his shoulder felt like it had a lot of pressure against it whereas my hips felt perfectly cradled. He said both of those would be very problematic for him.
We tried the Baronet and he liked it. It felt too firm to me but that improved with the topper. He clearly wanted to feel more “on top” of the bed while also feeling squished tried the Sublime with opulence topper and we both really liked it. A $26k mattress! We both felt supported and comfortable. It was the winner for us from Vispring.
We then walked over to Custom Comfort and one of the owners Gary helped us and he was amazing. Talk about getting a master class in mattresses! He started us on a very firm innerspring and moved us through from there to all latex and then to comfort coil. Something pretty amazing he has in the showroom are some clear plastic cubes of a mattress from another brand cut up, and it’s remarkable how much foam is in these things claiming to be all natural. He showed us a Saatva, which is doing a great PR run right now, and the thing has so much foam. It’s not at all what they show on their website. I googled it and found a video of mattress makers taking a Saatva apart and it was identical to what Gary showed us. Major amounts of foam!!! Like cheap foam. Googling “what’s inside an (fill in blank) mattress” and searching for videos seems to be a great way to really see what’s in there. Other major offenders is the cheap foam category were Kluft, Sealy, and others. I’m not saying these are necessarily all bad mattresses, but it’s certainly a misrepresentation of what’s really inside your bed. I went to the Saatva website to see how they show their mattresses and trust me it wasn’t this! Feels deceptive…
At custom comfort we both fell in love with the Calistoga with a 4” estate topper. In a King this runs around $10k. My husband lay in it and it was probably mattress 16 of the day, and he suddenly reacted “this is it.” Interestingly I had tested this one a few days ago but didn’t tell him it was a top two for me (the Vispring Tiara was my other top choic). I wanted a blind reaction from him. After I tried it again yesterday it was also my clear favorite, both for value and I just loved the mattress.
To add to the excitement they had the mattress on an adjustable base. I always assumed an adjustable bed was for the elderly but WOW does it make an immediate difference to me for my hips. Also I think it will help elevate my husband just enough to reduce snoring. I have a B+B Italia Tufty bed, and needed to make sure that this would work. When I got home we removed our mattress and were able to remove the slats and framing very easily, so they can build an adjustable base that essentially floats internal to our bed. I’m so excited. The adjustable part runs around $2k for a king, is totally silent. We aren’t upgrading to the one with massage, which felt more like vibration. I wouldn’t use it and didn’t like the sound of it. But the adjustability is amazing.
All in this was a really great experience and this forum has been so insanely helpful. I’ll have to figure out a good mattress protector as well as pillow.
