issues with 5" 20ILD comfort layer due to misidentification of mattress toplayer

a brief update regarding the 6" 34ILD dunlop core layer: either the foam or the mattress cover has softened/loosened slightly as to give a slightly more pleasing subjective feel of the 3" talalay topper. i would say it is near the overall feel of near to that of the original mattress with the 2" 20ILD on the very-bottom.

the only (relatively) objective analysis i have is that prior, if while sitting on the mattress and were to come down with all of my weight on my butt, i would immediately sink-through and hit the core layer, but i would not oscillate. now that the overall feel of the mattress “feels” slightly softer as originally, when i do the butt-test i get a bit of oscillation up and down before completely dampening out. over time, there seems to be a bit more “springy-ness” inherent to talalay topper.

the 28ILD 3" medium talalay arrives tomorrow and 'll report back within a week on my experiences. thank you again for all of the respective input provided above.

Thank you for the update. Let us know how your medium ‘transition’ layer works out for you. Good luck!

a brief update with the new medium transition layer:

  • 6" 34ILD dunlop (wool cover) / new 3" 28ILD talalay (no cover) / 3" 20ILD talalay (wool cover)

the comfort feeling of the mattress now is simply fantastic. just laying in bed is pleasurable from the response and feel of the additional talalay transition layer. the downside seems to be that i can now feel my hips sink down ever-so-slightly further (maybe only an additional inch or so), but it is causing some lower back pain when i wake in the morning. nothing overly dramatic, but some slight pain is there. no issues with any other pressure points (shoulders, neck).

as of this morning i’ve swapped the (2) talalay layers and will try in this configuration:

  • 6" 34ILD dunlop (wool cover) / 3" 20ILD talalay (wool cover) / 3" 28ILD talalay (no cover)

immediately while laying on the bed it doesn’t feel as though my hips sink down as far as the original configuration, so i will try this out for the next week and report back. with the exception of some slight lower back pain, everything else is absolutely phenomenal in terms of feel and comfort with the transition layer applied.

in terms of the original configuration, perhaps it would have been best to go with 2" 28ILD transition layer vs 3" - if that is what is causing my hips to sink-in just a touch too far. any thoughts on this? also - does anyone have any input on how common or effective a configuration is where a lower ILD is used under a higher ILD (20ILD transition / 28ILD top/comfort layer)?

this is quite an undertaking but i’m really appreciating learning the feel and behavior of the multiple types of layers. it is certainly helping me become a more informed consumer.

Hello Mike

It seems as though you are right in the ball park you need to be in. I do agree in that if the 20ILD over the 28 is a touch too soft, then switching them is the next logical step. If that does not work, then I would order either a 2" 20ILD or if you desire to keep the top layer at 3 iches, I would recommend switching the 20 for a slightly higher ILD…like a 22.

Thanks for the updates. Happy hunting, and good luck!

i gave it some time with the configuration listed above, but still waking up with slight lower back pain in the morning.

i’m going to do a “reset” and go back to the original configuration without the medium transition layer (thus, 6" 34ILD, 3" 20ILD talalay) and make sure i am not experiencing the same back pain (just as process of elimination).

i’m also going to try just the 3" 28ILD talalay as a comfort layer (thus, 6" 34ILD, 3" 28ILD talalay) just to see how i experience that over the course of a few nights vs the 20ILD comfort layer.

Hello Mike

Thank you for keeping us posted. Let us know how your ‘reset’ goes for you. Good luck!

quick update: i ended up returning the 3" 28ILD medium/transition layer and replacing with the 2" 28ILD and happy to say i think everything is now in order! great comfort and “feel” and no aches or pains over the past week. i think my case is solved

  • 6" 34ILD dunlop / 2" 28ILD talalay / 3" 20ILD talalay

i just wanted to thank sleepEZ for the fantastic customer service and also for sending the plastic bag to be used for the topper return and an appropriately sized box - it made things VERY easy and accommodating for a task that i was otherwise not looking forward. thank you!

Mike

I am happy to hear that you found the comfort you were looking for! Thank you for always keeping us posted throughout! Happy Sleeping!
