Also, Back Science and Beautyrest just happened to be a part of the conversation. Both are great companies. Just trying to explain the confusing world of mattresses!
Thank you, @EngineeredSleep, for highlighting this important point. There are misconceptions among consumers who believe that compressing a mattress can damage its structure or components. In reality, mattresses are specifically engineered to be compressed, rolled, and boxed without compromising their integrity or lifespan.
Most high-quality, compressed mattresses are made to order and should ideally be unpacked and expanded by the sleeper within a week of delivery to prevent any potential fatigue in the springs or foam.
Additionally, just because a mattress has a hefty price tagâlike $6,500âdoesnât guarantee superior quality. If it uses subpar materials such as inferior foams and springs, it will still be an inferior mattress, regardless of its compression capabilities. While a mattress may indeed be of higher quality if it isnât designed to be compressed, this is not inherently tied to whether it can be compressed or boxed. Conversely, a similarly priced compressible mattress does not necessarily indicate it is a better or higher-quality option.
Itâs crucial to examine each component and layer of a mattress, considering how those elements are balanced in the construction and how each is processed and manufactured. This thorough evaluation is essential to determine true quality.
Just to add to what ES explained.

Back Science mattress would be great to me??
Hey Filbert,
@BackScience has a mattress you might like in their series 3 mattress. I know you like very plush on the top, and theirs is more medium. But it may be something you would like better than the BR you got last year.
Remember, as @EngineeredSleep mentioned, and @Sleep_EZ, it is all about the quality of the layers and how they are constructed, with an option to âplush it upâ with a Talalay topper if necessary.
Good quality is good quality, that should be the goal, so the comfort and preferences you desire remain for a long time.
Is Back Science mattress has very plush at the top only??
I would say it this way. The back science offers a very supportive mattress with and enhanced lumbar option. The BS 3 offers a softer comfort layer than the 1 or 2.
As you know and have read us write about all the time, feel of a mattress is subjective. If you speak with @BackScience, they not only sell the backscience mattress, but they have a location that sells other mattresses and they could offer you additional advice as to the level of plushness of what they offer compared to your BR.
Good luck with it.
I appreciate the interest and I am happy to join the conversation, since I not only helped create the Back Science mattresses, but I have have a unique perspective as both a Doctor of Chiropractic, as well as a 20+ year product development specialist that has helped design other brands and has been a direct part of the sales process for virtually every brand you can think of, thanks to our flagship Ultrabed mattress store (www.Ultrabed.com) that is also our corporate headquarters in Southern California (near Malibu for reference).
First, to clear-up the misconception about the the bed-in-the-box vs. full size mattresses that cannot be rolled-up and shipped that way, there is definitely a difference and it has to do with resiliency, as well as specific feel and support. In general, higher density and higher resiliency foams will not perform as well when compressed and rolled up, but some of this is a factor of how long it is rolled-up, which is why an all U.S.A. bed-in-the-box may be a better alternative if they are producing and shipping on a much faster cycle than when it sits on a ship overseas and potentially adds months to the reach its final destination. Another reason that certain materials will do better when they are not compressed has to do with added edge support to the mattress, which can create issues if the mattress is rolled and compressed. To the point that Engineered Sleep makes, the high-level individually wrapped coils springs are rolled when they come in, but they are not heavily compressed with other materials and since they are locally U.S.A. made, they are not rolled for very long and therefore have no impact on the mattress feel for support.
With that said, Bed-In-The-Box mattresses do hold the advantage of saving on cost for shipping and do give the added benefit of pre-breaking in your mattress, which means it should feel great once it decompresses out the box and really can be a great economical choice, since the shipping savings alone will allow most manufacturers to give a better pricing level. In general, customers love the feel of some of the high level Bed-In-The-Box brands, but if they are particular about edge support and/or want the least motion transfer possible, they may opt for a non-compressed style mattress and they should be aware that many of the Bed-In-A-Box lower tier brands use very low density materials and cheaper coils that wonât hold up.
To answer your question about the Back Science Series 3 mattress (a part of our non-compressed Hybrid mattress line), it has the same firmer and extra supportive innerspring and special Lumbar-Flex zoned core and transition layering as the Series 2, but with a thicker and therefor more luxurious Hypergel top that is reminiscent of a high-end pillow-top hotel style feel, but without the fiber to potentially matt-down quicker. With that said, keep in mind that we are able to further customize your top layer system to be even softer or firmer, should you feel like it does not properly suit your needs and that there is a full 1-year sleep trial, whereby there is no charge to make any modifications and that we would even be happy to even exchange the mattress for another brand or refund you purchase price if for some reason we canât get you to the level that makes you completely satisfied.

i probably not getting Back Science mattress because i never have my back pain. When I get older, i still getting Back Science mattress for my back pain.
I donât blame you for coming to that conclusion, but I will say that most couples that purchase will have one person that has back pain and the other that does not and our feedback for both sleepers are just as good. Thatâs because having your back aligned well doesnât prevent it from feeling comfortable and thanks to our Hypergel top pressure relieving layering, the instore feedback has been that it is at the top level of comfort when comparing to other mattresses on the floor. I really think based on your needs, the mattress will work perfectly, but do keep in mind that we can customize it anyway, should you not be one of the 9 out of 10 sleepers that love it from the get go.
Posh+Lavish never restock in my city, please I would like to know where I can and buy extremely plush 6" mattress topper similar to Hastens mattress topper while iâm buying my firm mattress? I donât want Engineered Sleep and Back Science.
bump still waiting for reply
Have you tried Engineered Sleep and BackScience?
John
iâll try BackScience
@BackScience before iâm going to buy Back Science mattress, please i would like to know how many inches at the top very soft?
You have 1 inch of the softer layer at the top on the Series 1 and 2 and 2 inches on the series 3. The second layer is more of a medium firmness and that is 1 inch on the Series 1, 2 inches on the Series 2 and 3 inches on the Series 3.
Thanks for your inquiry!
