1 or 2 8nch soft latex topper?

Hi I recently purchased a 2 inch soft latex topper and I felt like it was too soft so they sent me a two inch medium and it’s too hard. I bought the topper because the mattress that I currently have is too firm and I needed some softness. Both are causing my butt cheeks to hurt and my back to be stiff. Should I get a 1 inch soft? I am petite overweight and sleep mostly on my back then flip to my side. Thanks!

Hi tambryjo,

Welcome to the MattressUnderGround and thank you for your question. I am going to pause on my answer and let the latex experts/Trusted Members here at the MattressUnderGround work with you to solve this issue.

I would suggest, providing some additional and very crucial information. Age, height, weight, current mattress and foundation type or model.

Engineering a mattress involves carefully aligning materials, foams, foundations, and other essential elements to thoroughly assess and comprehend the entire scenario, including identifying potential obstacles. The Trusted Members here see just about every conceivable combination and problem every day of the week, but we need to fully understand the compete picture before attempting to recommend a solution.

While it may seem as simple as swapping out one layer to X or Y, there is plenty more to consider. Even the term “soft” can be rather vague as firmness is subjective and each manufacturer will have their own definitions for identifying firmness levels.

We look forward to you providing some additional facts so we can help solve your problem.

Thanks,

Maverick

Hi tambryjo - welcome the the Mattress Underground!

It is a little bit tricky to say from a distance, but typically we encourage at least 3 inches for a topper in order to feel the cushioning. I would suggest taking an hour or so and visiting a mattress showroom and trying a few different options in order to see what feels good to you. You may want to also consider a wool topper if you are not allergic to wool, as some people find that works for them.

I had a 3 inch topper cuz my bed was way to firm. But it started to cause stiffness and it was 3 or so years old. That’s why bought a 2 inch soft which was suggested from sleep on latex. I slept on it last night/morning again and my back and butt hurt like crazy. I am going to try the medium again. I can’t get comfortable. They also said that weight does not matter. But I think it does. I can not spend any more money. The trial period us almost up. If the medium is to hard I think I will just return both and get 1 inch soft.

Again, there are numerous variables at play here. Without specific information, any conclusions would be speculative.

The issue could stem from health concerns or issues related to muscles and nerves. It’s possible that there may be zoning in your current mattress that is causing imbalance.

Estimating thicknesses and ILD values at this stage would be purely guesswork.

Without the full scope of information, you are destined to repeat errors over and over again.

If the topper is Dunlop, you might want to get a 2" medium Talalay. If you want to stick with Dunlop and the 2" medium Dunlop was too firm, please note that a 3" medium topper will be softer than the 2", so that may also be a viable solution.

I checked the website. It is made of both. I slept on medium last night and it was uncomfortable.
