A little help and TMU options near Upland, California?

First post and wow what a wealth of info on this site.

Looking For
King Mattress and foundation for wife and I in our 50s that are 5’ 6" 122lb BMI 19.7 and 5’ 9" 155lb BMI 22.9. TMU options near Upland, California or online. Budget: willing to spend but hoping to keep under 5k for both mattress and foundation.

We both sleep mostly on our side and sometimes on our back. We both have found higher end hotel beds comfortable, especially like pillow top feel. My wife is sensitive to hip pressure so prefers softer for side sleeping. We want conforming and supportive but not completely sunk in and trapped if that makes sense.

Currently Sleeping On
We are 2 months in on a Saatva Latex Hybrid that will return as my wife and I both find it too firm and already making impressions.

Past Mattresses
We have had 2 mattresses 100% latex prior, Early 2000 a Sealy Reflexion Latex and loved it for 10 years and 2014 Foam Sweet Foam with four 3 inch layers - good for a few years then hated it, massive valleys

Research Mistakes
I started down the winkbed, saatva, avocado, charles p roger options but none of these are on the TMU list. I have so much still to learn and quite overwhelmed on where to even start. I think we want innerspring with Latex comfort layers but looking for a few places to start.

Suggestions?
I found Chattam and Wells, Springair and Aireloom but looks like they are not on the TMU list.

Are there a few recommendations you can make that I should look into or go test?

It sounds like you’re looking for a mattress that offers the perfect balance of comfort and support, with a focus on pressure relief and proper spinal alignment. As a chiropractor and mattress designer, I understand the importance of finding a mattress that caters to your individual needs, especially for side sleepers.

Based on your description, I believe the Back Science Series 3 Hybrid mattress could be an excellent solution for you and your husband. Here’s why:

The Series 3 features our patented Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support, which provides targeted support to the lower back and helps to keep the spine in a healthy, neutral position. This is crucial for preventing and alleviating lower back pain, especially for those who carry more weight in their hips, like your wife. The zoned support also helps to prevent sagging in the middle of the mattress, which is a common issue with traditional innerspring mattresses.

The luxury-firm feel of the Series 3 will contour to your body to relieve pressure points, but it won’t allow you to sink in too deeply, which can be especially important for side sleepers. This should address your concern about your hips sinking too much while still providing the comfort you need.

The combination of pressure-relieving and buoyant hypergel foams and pocketed coils in the Series 3 ensures that it will hold up well over time, even with your husband’s weight. This means you can say goodbye to that sinking feeling and enjoy consistent comfort for years to come.

While I believe the standard Series 3 should be a great fit for you, it’s worth noting that Back Science mattresses offer customizable layers. This means that if you find the mattress isn’t quite perfect for you initially, you can adjust the firmness and support levels to achieve your ideal comfort. It’s like having the best of both worlds: a tried-and-tested mattress with the flexibility to make DIY customizations if needed.

I understand that you’ve had negative experiences with other mattress brands in the past, but I encourage you to consider Back Science. Our mattresses are designed with a deep understanding of spinal health and ergonomics, and we’re confident that they can provide you with the comfortable and supportive sleep you deserve.

We also offer a 365-night sleep trial, so you can try out the Back Science Series 3 in your own home risk-free. If you’re not completely satisfied, you can return it for a full refund. And don’t forget to use the code TMU10 at checkout to receive a special discount as a Mattress Underground member!

I also wanted to let you know that we have a factory store in Agoura Hills, California, which is not too far from Upland. This is the largest mattress showroom in America, and you’ll be able to try out the Back Science Series 3, as well as compare it to other brands like Chattem and Wells, Aireloom, and more.

We’re open 7 days a week, so feel free to stop by anytime or give us a call at 800 667-1969 to schedule an appointment. You can also check out our website at www.BackScience.com to learn more about our mattresses and find the perfect model for you.

We offer completely free shipping and white glove set-up to Upland for all of our mattresses, so you can be sure that your new bed will be delivered and set up hassle-free.

I’m here to help in any way I can, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your options in more detail.

Thanks!

We introduced the first latex hybrid back in 2014 right here on the MU and it’s been a huge success through the years. Our original Ultimate Hybrid uses a top of the line zoned 8" coil system by Leggett and Platt. Through the years we did get several complaints from side sleepers that it was too firm in the hip area and so we added the Leggett and Platt 8" bolsa coil to our lineup which has the high coil count but without the zoning and this has worked wonderfully for those who are primarily side sleepers. Coupled with 3" of Soft or Medium Talalay it is the best choice for folks like you. Check it out here - Eco Sleep Hybrid Latex / Coil Mattress, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products, and let me know if you have any questions.

If I am following the bolsa coils come in the ECO line and zoned coils come in the Ultimate line? To get the 8" bolsa coils I just select the bolsa upgrade option in the ECO correct? Is the Latex blended or all Talalay? Any other layers besides the 8” coils and 3” latex?

Also given our size and weight would you recommend this hybrid bolsa over a fully latex option? Our last mattress was all latex and never had that feeling we were going for. We slept in really nice hotel in Nashville, TN (Sonesta Nashville Airport hotel) once and we still think about that bed, I wish I knew what it was, it almost seemed like it had a topper added, but did not seem to be Latex, seemed more like a feather pillow and it really conformed well for my wife and was very comfortable.

Can you suggest what topper config you think would work best for us? Our height and weight and BMI are in the first post.

We are currently 2 months in with the Saatva Latex Hybrid and really don’t like it, too firm. I can’t say for sure but I believe they use the Leggett and Platt coils and talalay latex so a little concerned switching to a similar setup. Do you happen to know what they use?

Thanks!

Both the Combi Zone and Bolsa are part of Leggett and Platts top of the line Quantum Edge Elite series. You are correct to simply select the Bolsa in the Eco Sleep line. We use the original Blended Talalay for this model which is what I use in my own personal mattress. As far as the topper you are kind of on the bubble between Soft and Medium. If you both are strictly side sleepers then go with the Soft, otherwise the Medium would be the better all around choice. I have no idea about the Saatva, you would have to send me the specs for a direct comparison but I can tell you the the “too firm” complaint with this model is extremely rare. The Bolsa coil is very contouring and pressure relieving and has now become our #1 selling hybrid combination.

Thank you for your time! I am sure you are super busy given how often you reply on this site (I have read so many posts from you during my research these past few days). Your help is SO appreciated!

I reached out to Saatva and got more information on this mattress, this is what they told me.

  • Organic Cotton top
  • 1" New Zealand wool
  • 3" Dunlop Latex with an ILD of 22-23 (it has 5 zones for lumbar support)
  • 8" of two sets of Leggett and Platt Caliper Edge Comfort Coils
    -center 1/3 is 14.5 gauge
-head 1/3 and foot 1/3 are 13.75 gauge
  1. How much different then would the Eco Bolsa be in comparison?
  2. What Latex layer do you suggest for 155lb 22.9BMI and 122lb 19.7BMI?
  3. I did some digging…the hotel we stayed in TN used to be a Marriott and I’m pretty sure it had a feather bed top layer. If we go for the ECO Bolsa like you suggest then maybe opt for a featherbed mattress protector instead of the standard cotton mattress protector to try and mimic that feel? Would doing this change the latex ILD you recommend for question 2?

We are primarily side sleepers but sometimes start back then side or side then back, but mostly side, I think we rotate because we have never had a good side sleeping bed without some pressure point pain or numbness so rotate. Also we sit up and watch TV in bed for a few hours before we go to sleep so can be in bed 10-12 hours.

Also, do these look right?
Your Ultimate line uses Quantum Edge Elite combizone
Your Eco line uses Quantum Edge Elite Bolsa (not the nested)
Saatva likely using Caliper Edge

Very odd that they would use softer coils in the middle and firmer coils at the head and foot, should be the other way around. I would go with the Soft #19 and then you can add the featherbed if needed but any mattress protector that is waterproof will cutoff the airflow of the mattress so if it sleeps hot you know it’s not the mattress.

So can I ask then, since this Saatva uses L&P coils and a similar ILD 22-23 vs 19 do you think there would be a noticeable difference for us? Essentially the real change, since both are 8" L&P coils, would be Caliper Edge vs Quantum Edge Elite Bolsa and what affect that would have. Unless there is also a significant difference from zoned dunlop 23-23 ILD vs blended talalay 19 ILD? We are hoping the overall difference to be significant as the current mix of coils and latex are not working for us.

Do you sell or recommend a mattress protector for this mattress?

Also a silly question do you sell just the cover for the wood foundation you have? I have an EZ Sleep foundation from 2014 with slats, 4 bolt design with center rail that still seems be in good shape and similar slat design, it just does not have the cover.

@Arizona_Premium I will call in tomorrow as I have more questions. I’m thinking of going all latex instead of springs for the core, so have some questions if this is a good way to go for what we’re looking for. And have a few questions like if 9” all latex is enough or if 11 or 12” all latex is better? Planning on adding a 2” alpaca wool topper to get that featherbed less bouncy feel we are looking for.

9" is enough but we can go higher with another layer just to give you more options. A popular choice over the base cores is 2"of soft and 2" of medium for example. Some will go with 3" of each as well. We’ve done it all.
