Adding a topper or cutting losses and buying a new mattress?

First off, I’m so glad I found this site after buying far too many mattresses, toppers, and pillows in the last few years to try to get a comfortable night sleep. I’ve realized how little I knew and am so grateful for experts like you helping inform buyers.

Now, my current situation is I made the mistake of buying a Queen Size Simmons Legend Firm Mattress (only a year ago) that feels both too firm for my low BMI and exclusive side sleeping scoliosis/hip pain ridden self (maybe caused by the mattresses) and also has an annoying ridge in the middle (I share the bed with my SO who also finds it uncomfortable but is far less picky). My question is should I try adding a 3" latex topper to soften things up OR should I cut my losses and get an all latex bed because maybe theres something wrong with the underlying support layers of the Simmons bed?

My inclination is I’ve never tried latex so a topper would allow me to at least see how I like it but I’d hate to spend the money on it just to later be unsatisfied as the ridge comes back and maybe other problems persist (at that point I’d be tempted to remove the Simmons comfort layers all together and just use the springs with the latex topper). FYI I’ve tried memory foam and don’t like the sinking-in and hot feeling (it also did not relieve my pains).

On the other hand, we both always sleep better when we have a king size mattress at hotels (we’re 5’10" and 6’3" respectively) and I haven’t seen this topic discussed yet on the forum but I feel like the ridge situation would be easier to avoid with a king because (1) someone could sleep in the middle without disturbing the other person and (2) you could maybe get away with rotating the bed 90 degrees to prevent it from forming? Of course, my mattress is not flippable. A new king size latex mattress could solve that issue as well (though I guess mattress surgery on my current bed could too).

I guess I’m wondering if you agree - is a king size worth it in terms of added comfort in avoiding the ridge/body impression issue and in just having more space? and is spending the $300+ on a topper likely to be just a temporary solution? Maybe I can find a company I can try a topper from who accepts returns (a trial type situation) to make sure I like latex at all.

Hello Whatthenicole

Thank you kindly for your inquiry! If your mattress is too firm as it stands currently, then adding a 2" or 3" topper is ideal in most cases. The great thing about latex toppers is that they contour naturally to your body, and are open-celled, which allows the foam to breath and therefore sleeps cooler than most other foams.

We recommend topper densities based primarily on the individuals weights and preferred sleeping positions. For example, in most cases we have found that our soft toppers (19-20ILD) are favored by side and/or back sleepers that weigh less than 170lbs. Medium toppers are popular for side/back sleepers weighing over 170lbs. Talalay latex is by far the most popular latex for toppers due to its overall consistency and contouring affect.

I would recommend trying a topper on your current mattress first, then if you feel as though you want to start over and go with an all-latex mattress, you can incorporate your existing topper into your new latex mattress and save some money in doing so. For example, should you purchase a 10" (three 3" layers) latex mattress from SleepEZ, but you already have a latex layer in your possession, then you can simply order a 7" (2 Layer) mattress and we will up-size the mattress cover to accommodate three layers at no additional cost.

Latex foam helps eliminate motion transfer in your mattress due to its natural contouring nature. Because of this there will be little to no difference between a queen or a king size mattress when it pertains to motion transfer. I would however recommend a king size if you are looking for maximum side to side sleep space for you and your partner. That extra 16" that a king gives you in width over that of the queen does make a huge difference.
