Back pain with Beauty Rest Opal Sands Extra Firm

A year ago I bought this from R&F, Size Full: https://www.raymourflanigan.com/mattresses/firm-mattresses/beautyrest-harmony-opal-sands-extra-firm-mattress-467004037

Today it’s sagging 0.75 inches (according to the service technician), which my lower back loves, but I’d say it’s closer to an inch according to my measurement. Of course, since it’s not 1.5 inches, they won’t honor the warranty. So I’m in between a rock and a nominally soft space here.

I’m still in the midst of my basic research of where to go next, but wanted to throw a line out there. Anyone have a similar experience with this mattress? It was originally good until now and it cured my previous back pain. But now its back unfortunately. I’m assuming the bed wasn’t made with durable materials. Any recommendations where I could get something more durable that won’t break within a year? Is this a case of the comfort layers just degrading?

Hi, R_And_F_Hater37,
Welcome to TMU.
Sorry to hear you have had issues with your mattress. The bedroom is not place to cause back pain, it is a place for pleasure and a good night’s sleep.

I have read on other sites that discuss mattresses that the harmony has had issues with sagging. I suppose if someone has complained about it, most likely it is true. It is sad to say that a variety of BR users have run into sagging issues in less time than one would prefer. I suspect that in the “big boys” category, it seems to be a common theme. It is not clear that the mattresses are just no made well or more people tend to complain when they run into an issue and just want to get it off their chest. I have my opinion about this phenomenon, but I will reserve that for another time. It is hard to compare this mattress to others as they dont offer a lot of information about it.

I suppose the harmony lux on the BR web site is the closest to this model. I mention this a lot, but when it comes to super firm mattresses, which is what I sleep on, I like it simple. Heavier gauge quality hardened coils 12.75 to 13.75gauge. If hybrid, a durable HD 1.8lb or better base foam under the coils usually about a half to an inch thick, with a HD foam above the coils for extra support and firmness at least 36 ILD and a firm quilted cover/panel. I find when manufacturers start to pile a lot of foam, particularly viscoelastic memory foam as part of the comfort layer and/or cheaper less durable foams, you tend to get the potential titanic, particularly in the bottom area. Many of the traditional brands that we have known for years do an ok job, but it seems to be a race to make the display model look like a luxury couch which is certainly eye candy to those who get that first visual and say wow. Until the candy turns out to be a sour patch kid.

I guess when you are making thousands or tens of thousands mattresses, a few bucks extra for each mattress in quality materials cut into profits enough that some of these manufacturers just figure, everything else in the world is becoming disposable, why not our mattresses. Planned obsolesce leaves the consumer with an expensive bill every few years rather than every 10 or 15. Private manufacturers like those featured her at TMU (https://mattressunderground.com/the-underground/our-trusted-members) along with a few online BinB’s are still doing it right and producing quality mattresses of years past. Like I mentioned, good support layer, simple quality comfort layer, durable cover/panel layer and you have a quality mattress you can count on.

That is not to say that at Hastens 17" mattress is bad as they use only quality materials. It just means if you are going to all Bouffant or pompadour on the mattress, it better be with quality materials otherwise that souffle will sink like it has cooled for hours. If you dont mind, what is your height and weight and if there is your significant other’s. Do you prefer a hybrid, all foam, traditional innerspring, or just a good solid quality mattress. While we wait to get your PPP’s ((Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) take a look at the shopping guide tutorial (https://mattressunderground.com/c-articles/687-mattress-tutorial-condensed).

Also, as you do your search, be mindful of the establishment you are looking at. Know what their refund, return, restocking fee and exchange policies are in advance to save you a potential headache down the road, just in case things dont work out as planned.

Unfortunately the boys are right. It’s no longer “you get what you pay for”, and big mattress companies are notorious for putting out junk anymore. Two years ago I got an expensive Kingsdown at Mattress Firm. It seemed like a comfortable mattress, until the first week showed 1.5 inch body impressions. So I went to MF with photos of the impressions and was told it was too soon to file a warranty claim, but I could pay $250 to return it and pick something else. So we exchanged for a Stearns and Foster Hurston Luxury Firm, which did the same thing within the first week. My husband and I aren’t big people. During one of our monthly mattress rotations, I slipped off and fell back like a boomerang into an antique dresser handle, and dislocated my shoulder, causing a fracture. We suffered with that mattress for over a year and finally, after we were both barely sleeping and waking with back pain, we filed a warranty claim. We filed it a week after a rotation, and one side was 1.5, while the other side was slightly less. S&F said it was normal body impressions and denied the claim. I feel I was lucky to find Mattress Underground and read everything I could about quality mattresses. It stinks that you have to look for another mattress after only a year, but that’s exactly why the big companies make them as low quality as they do. So, look through the list of trusted members, and I’m sure you’ll find something much better.

Hey there,

Yeah my post is part complaining and also part warning to anyone maybe considering that mattress. Hopefully that’s not too annoying for a first post

Thanks for your insight. Thankfully a TMU is sort of close by. I will be giving one my business next.

Sorry to hear you were caused so much pain and sorry to hear about your fall. I’m sure I’m just preaching to the crowd but it’s weird to me that the mattress industry(larger brands) of all things is allowed to have such an information asymmetry when it comes to their customers. Good thing this site exists.

For the most part, I think it’s that way with most manufactured items lately. Appliances are some of the worst. Years ago people would get a new refrigerator and it lasted 30 years. Now the life expectancy of a new one is about 7 years. It seems the same with major brand mattresses in the past 10 years. We have to do more research before a major purchase, and definitely can’t rely on reviews. My past mattress mistakes were my own fault for not doing more research, but I feel better knowing I might be able to help others not to repeat my mistakes.

@R_And_F_Hater37,
Just like the saying, One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Whether your post was a first or a fifth. Someone will benefit from your experience, which is exactly why you needed to post it. If 80 out of 100 have the same experience as you with the same or similar mattress from the same brand, it probably is not a coincidence. The only way anyone will know about someone else’s experience is if they post it and talk about it. It could be a one off or a chronic problem. Hopefully, any information gained here at TMU will lead you to a better solution the next time and arm you with enough information to better understand how to evaluate your next purchase. Good luck, Norm

I’m sorry to hear about your experience with the sagging mattress. It can be incredibly frustrating when a mattress that initially helped with back pain starts to cause problems again,Since the sagging is close to the warranty limit, try documenting the issue with detailed photos and measurements. Sometimes, having solid evidence can help when negotiating with the manufacturer or retailer. When looking for a new mattress, focus on those known for durability. Materials like latex and high-density memory foam tend to hold up better over time compared to lower-density foams,Although Hybrid mattresses with quality coils can also be a good choice.I have been using it,but research yourself before buying a new one.I hope it helps
