Best Hybrid Mattress? Looking for Budget Friendly

I’m getting over my procrastination and making a big girl mattress (and Thuma bed frame) purchase this year. I currently have a Queen size Bob’s Furniture mattress (I know I know) that my dad gifted to me about 7-8 years ago and I think it’s time for it to go. I can’t take the constant squeaking and back and neck pain it causes me.

For the new mattress, my max budget is about 1.5K. I’m looking for something that’s quality and BIFL and although I would prefer something cheaper, I’m willing to spend what I need to spend.

Here are some more details about me/preferences:

  • 26 y/o female
  • 5’1
  • 120-130 lbs
  • I’m mainly a back sleeper, but I shift throughout the night
  • I prefer a medium-firm feel
  • I sometimes share a bed with my younger sister when she’s over. She has about the same weight and height as me except she’s a hot sleeper
  • I also share a bed with my 60-80 lb dog, so I might also buy a protector
  • I take a long time to make informed and confident purchases, especially when they’re a lot of $, so I would like to try them in person

I’ve been seeing recs and positive reviews about the DLX hybrid and I took the Good Bed quiz which suggested an Avocado, but I’m not sure how good these are. I also think I’m leaning toward a hybrid build.Thank you for all your suggestions based on my preferences. I’m open to hearing about your current mattresses, why you like them, etc. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi ewilv,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround. We are happy to have you here.

Since you’re mainly a back sleeper and prefer a medium-firm feel, a hybrid mattress could be an excellent option for you. Hybrids offer a balance of support from innerspring coils with the comfort of foam or latex layers, which is ideal if you change positions throughout the night. The @DLX hybrid you mentioned is solid choice, as hybrids tend to provide good pressure relief, helping to alleviate back and neck pain and DLX makes an excellent quality mattress and offers a generous trial period with excellent customer service.

Regarding the Avocado mattress, it’s a well-regarded option known for its natural materials like organic latex and wool, which provide a durable and eco-friendly product. However, it’s important to know that many users report that the Avocado tends to feel firmer than other mattresses in its category. This is not a bad thing or a good thing, it is simply what others have mentioned when purchasing an Avocado. From a construction standpoint, Avocado is solid choice. It may feel a bit harder than expected, especially if you’re used to a softer feel. While its trial period and return policy are beneficial, the firmness might not align perfectly with your preferences. If you find that it’s too firm, you could always adjust the feel by adding a mattress topper, which could provide that extra softness you’re seeking.

As others may have suggested to you, testing a mattress in person can offer some insight as to whether the mattress you are considering is too soft. When a mattress seems a bit firm, that is where it can get a bit tricky. Most foam incorporated mattresses will soften over time, even natural latex. As you trial your mattress, you need to take that into consideration and allow your trial to run its course as you may feel differently in week 3 than you did in week 1. Of course, there is no substitute for experiencing a new mattress in your home environment, regardless of what it felt like in the showroom.

A mattress’s firmness can feel different based on the setting. Also, since you sometimes share your bed with your sister and dog, finding a mattress that minimizes motion transfer will enhance the sleep experience for both of you, ensuring you aren’t disturbed by any shifts in position.

Understanding you have a budget of $1.5K, you have many high-quality options to consider, but it’s important to remember to budget for extras like a mattress protector or topper if needed. If temperature regulation is a concern—especially with your sister being a hot sleeper, you might want to prioritize hybrids that offer good airflow.

The key point for you is that the mattress offers support, posture and alignment, and the pressure relief you prefer. Regarding the the DLX classic hybrid it is a dual sided mattress that will add extended longevity to your mattress experience.

Based on what your research has revealed, you are on the right track. You just need to determine if you prefer the all natural option mattress. If you have reservations regarding Avocado, as a natural choice, @My_Green_Mattress offers a similar construction and is within your budget.

All the best, if you have any questions about a mattress from any of the trusted members here at TMU, you can just use the @symbol as a prefix to the trusted member’s name like @Maverick and they will respond to you.

Maverick.

@ewilv It’s great that you’re taking the time to research and make an informed decision. The DLX Premier Hybrid is definitely worth considering based on your preferences and budget. It offers a medium-firm feel. Many customers with a similar height, weight, and sleep position have found it to provide good support and pressure relief, especially for back and combo sleepers. Plus, it’s within your $1.5K budget when using the discount code from the Mattress Underground.

One of the standout features of the Premier Hybrid is its flexibility. It has a zipper that allows you to adjust the firmness by changing the comfort layer, which can be helpful if your preferences change over time or select the wrong firmness.

As for the GoodBed quiz, there’s currently a known issue with their algorithm that’s impacting DLX recommendations. They recognized an error causing DLX to never be recommended, regardless of any changes to the inputs. Even if you select that you own a DLX and love it, and/or choose all the features that match a DLX mattress, it still wouldn’t be recommended. Hopefully, this issue will be resolved soon. The team at GoodBed is aware of this and actively working to resolve it, so hopefully, it will soon reflect a more accurate match for your preferences.

Thanks for considering DLX! There are a lot of great options out there.

Thanks! I actually didn’t know that your mattresses’ firmness was customizable, so that factor is definitely something I’m leaning toward.

I think I’m going to have to go with a DLX soon! I’m thinking about making the big purchase in February, hopefully when all the brands have discounts for Presidents Day. Thanks for flagging the coupon code! Am I right to say that it’s “Pheonix?”

Yes the code is Phoenix, spelled as you see here. You accidentally transposed the o and e. LOL.
Glad you found all the information helpful and informative.
