I’ve had a Chatham and Wells 16’’ cal king coil-spring mattress for 20 years. I gather from this site that it’s time to get a new one So I’m looking for the same quality or better for $5k or under in similar traditional materials, build quality, thickness, etc. I realize that even the C&W costs more than that now, but maybe I’ll find a floor model or maybe there’s an appropriate great-value local/regional manufacturer that you guys think I should look into? (I paid $2k for a floor model, but yes I realize that there has been some inflation over the last 20 years).
Hey there hag,
Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround. Thanks for the question.
Our new locator will be added in the near future to the Mattress UnderGround website.
To answer your question regarding NYC. Charles Beckley in NYC comes to mind. @TheCleanBedroom is likely to have a solution for your preference category.
In nearby NJ, @ShovlinMattress mattress can produce most any mattress you prefer. Gardner Mattress in Mass may be close enough to make the trip worthwhile, a pre-interview phone call might be valuable before you make that trip.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did look at both @TheCleanBedroom @ShovlinMattress and neither seems have anything in the ballpark of Chattham and Wells. Like most NYCers I don’t have a car, so anyplace the subway doesn’t go to is out of the question for me! In general, most of the discussion on this site seems to be about the qualities of different kinds of exotic foam, whereas I’m very old-skool, looking for something you could have happily bought 20 years ago.
So if you are really looking old school, Beckley and Orange Mattress in NJ are the two best options.
Orange Mattress makes mattresses the way mattresses the same way they were made a century ago, and, believe it or not, with the same equipment. Literally the original equipment, not replicas.
They still have horsehair mattresses and pillows, all wool and or cotton combinations, so this might be what you are looking for.

This is fascinating! Thanks. Will definitely study up on this.
Good afternoon Hag,
James here with Shovlin Mattress Factory.
Completely understand getting around without a car is difficult. We would gladly pay for your Uber or Train fare for you to come visit our showroom. We can still build you the old fashioned flippable mattresses with wool and horsehair if that is what you are looking for. We also offer all natural Talalay Latex Mattresses as well.
Feel free to give me me a call at our showroom at 908-322-4178.
Thanks,
James

Wow, that is simply amazing!
BRAVO!
Hi hag,
It looks like the Vispring mattresses we offer would be along the same lines as Chattham and Wells.
They’ve been crafting mattresses since 1901 and patented the individually pocketed spring. The rows of springs (thousands in a king size) are surrounded with natural materials such as Shetland wool, horsetail, cashmere and more as you go up the line of mattresses.
They are two-sided and flippable. You can customize the firmness.
The mattresses are handcrafted in Britain, but are sold in a few places in the US and our NYC showroom is one of them. I’d encourage you to check them out at the link I shared, or if you want the shorthand for number of springs and materials, here is a comparison chart.
Let us know if we can help. Our showroom is in Manhattan on the corner of 27th and 5th and easily accessible by mass transit.
Thanks. I will definitely stop by!
Though I have to say that from what I can gather, the price is probably well outside of my range. I’m thinking $5k max all in, including tax, delivery, etc. Hope we have a chance to talk about it.
It’s worth a call down there to see. I think there are some Vispring mattresses in that price range, and the staff is pretty knowledgeable about what other options there could be. They work hard to keep within someone’s price range, and $5K should give you a few options, depending on the size of the mattress.
They are closed today due to illness, but usually open 7 days a week.
