Hi! I’m looking for a mattress for a 170-pound back sleeper (me) and a 115-pound side sleeper (my wife). I have shoulder pain when I sleep on a side, and she snores. What mattress do you recommend? Do we need adjustable bases for snoring? Is king-size worth it (MattressFirm has discounts on king-size adjustable bases)?
We have tried Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt hybrid medium and Beautyrest pressuresmart plush. We kind of like zoned independent pocket coil hybrid mattresses.
Hi Freera,
Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround. We are happy to have you here and thank you for your question.
Based on your needs, there are a few key considerations for your mattress choice.
Since you’re a back sleeper and your wife is a side sleeper, the mattress needs to offer a good balance of support for your back and softness for her side sleeping. Zoned independent pocket coil hybrid mattresses are a great option, as they can provide tailored support in different areas of the mattress. Zoning can be a nuance feature, so be sure to speak with a seasoned mattress professional either in your local showroom or here at TMU as they will discuss the features and benefits and how they align with your comfort requirements.
I would recommend being cautious with the Beautyrest PressureSmart, as reviews (especially on Reddit and off the manufacturer’s website) have been less than glowing. It’s important to check these reviews in detail to ensure it aligns with your needs. The 10-30 minute lie on the mattress trial in the showroom is no indication of long term durability and comfort. Durability generally is derived and measured by the composition of the materials. Density, ILD, the foundation design are some factors. Additionally, where the product is made, combination of and thoughtfulness of the construction of the mattress will all be critical in determining long term durability and comfort. Of course, if you like a mattress and find it comfortable, and get the best sleep of your life, then by all means, that is likely the mattress for you. You opinion, is the only opinion that matters when it comes to your own comfort.
For snoring, an adjustable base can help by elevating your wife’s head, potentially improving airflow and reducing snoring. However, be cautious—depending on the cause of her snoring, an adjustable base might not be a guaranteed solution. Some snoring issues may be more related to sleep apnea or other factors, and an adjustable base may not address these.
Tempur-Pedic Preference: If you’ve enjoyed the Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt Hybrid, and especially if you both like the feel of memory foam, you may want to explore @backscience’s Tempflow mattresses. They offer customization options, so you can tailor the mattress to both of your specific needs. It could be an excellent choice if you’re looking for something more personalized for each of you with a better warranty, a more personalized collaborative effort to match both of your needs and comfort concerns. Truly a personalized experience.
Keep in mind that most companies, including Mattress Firm, have strict return policies on adjustable bases, although MF is known to have higher restocking fees. So, choose carefully, as once it’s set up, you might not have much flexibility to return it if it doesn’t work out.
If you don’t want separate Twin XL bases, consider a split head king or a split internal latex mattress with a split head adjustable base. This setup will give you both the flexibility to adjust your sides independently, while still having a larger mattress for comfort.
Ultimately, finding the right mattress involves balancing your comfort preferences, especially with the back and side sleeping differences. If you’re leaning toward Tempur-Pedic, exploring the customized Tempflow option could be worth considering as they incorporate creative channeling and air dissipation technology to expel heat build up in the mattress when sleeping!
The Trusted Members here at TMU are very transparent regarding their trials, return policies, and restocking fees if applicable. Just be mindful of the adjustable base and mattress return policies out in the general marketplace.
All the best on your search for the perfect mattress system.
Maverick
As a long-time mattress designer of both memory foam and innerspring hybrid mattresses, as well as being a Doctor of Chiropractic, I would be happy to give you some both general information to assist you, as well some more specific reasons to consider the brand I created called Back Science that took me over 20+ years to create. The Back Science mattress is a zoned hybrid, but unlike any other hybrids on the market, it offers more structured lumbar support through its double zoned, patent pending Lumbar-Flex interlocking support that makes it completely supportive, without losing the comfort in the hip region that other zoned mattresses tend to create. Also, Back Science was specifically tested with the Mattress Checker App. to objectively verify that your postural alignment will be properly maintained in order to help prevent the lower back from sinking too deeply, while allowing more pressure on the shoulders, which can lead discomfort and potential back problems over time. The Back Science Mattress is something I created after many years of seeing patients who suffered from back and shoulder issues due to poor mattress support and was developed by specifically performing hundreds of postural checks using the App. to really ensure that it works.
Another difference comes from the quality of the coils and density of the foams used. With Back Science, we are using extremely high-quality, all U.S.A. made components, such as our over 1,000 count individually wrapped coils and is a true hybrid system that uses a Hypergel foam on the surface, which will give that weightless pressure relief, but with a much more buoyant/springy surface that differs substantially from memory foam, but is far more contouring than a traditional quilted cover and therefore, more pressure relieving on the hips and shoulders. As Maverick mentioned, a good sleep trial is essential and with Back Science, you have a 365-night sleep trial, but to that point, you will never know how a mattress will perform until you sleep on it, so unlike other brands, our full 365-night trial allows for free customizations if needed to first try and solve the issue before returning or exchanging the mattress. That is part of Back Science’s success, though 9 out of 10 Back Science users love the way the mattress performs without any modifications. In your case, I really believe that the Back Science Series 3 would be perfect for preventing pressure points when you are on your sides and it is meant to work perfectly with our adjustable beds, though if you want just a bit of head elevation when side sleeping, I do absolutely recommend that you get an adjustable bed like our BackFlex models that have the ability to further alter your lumbar support, since you don’t want to do even a little upward bending without increasing the lumbar support, as that is necessary to put the overall bed on more of a gradual upward slant instead.
Lastly, I will add that I get the privilege of working direct with thousands of customers thanks to our flagship Ultrabed mattress store location in Southern California and I can tell you from my many customer interactions, that Back Science does bridge that gap that is found when traditional spring mattresses and memory foam mattresses won’t solve the problem that is required when someone requires more pressure relief, but does not want to sink in too much and gets hot.
Hopefully, this gives you an extra option, but feel free to write back if you have any questions, You can reach me back at this forum, call us at 800 667-1969 or email us direct. Also, if you do purchase a Back Science mattress, be sure to use the 10% off TMU10 discount code we give to The Mattress Underground members.
Thanks!
I live near San Francisco. Where can I try your mattress?
Our Ultrabed flagship store is located in Souther California in case you can somehow come down to our area of Agoura Hills, CA (half way between L.A. and Santa Barbara, but I will say that ultimately, you will never really know a mattress until you sleep on it and since you do like the way the Hybrid zoned mattresses felt in the store, I am quite sure you will enjoy the in-store comfort and with our full 1-year sleep trial, you have no risk to give it a try and that includes even switching to any of the major mattress brands we carry in what is the largest mattress showroom in America. Also, with my 24 or so years of experience helping customers find the right mattress, I am happy to do a phone consultation with you to give you more information and get some additional details that will allow me to confirm that what I am recommending is perfect for your needs. I can be reached at our 800 667-1969 number or you can email us the best number to reach you at if you want to take me up on that consultation.
Thanks again and l look forward to helping you both get the best sleep possible!
Review websites highly rate Saatva Classic, Winkbed, Avocado Green, and Leesa Sapira. They are much cheaper than Tempur-Pedic Pro Adapt Hybrid. Are they also high-quality?
Winkbed decent, Avocado, better, Leesa decent. You have to remember that Tempur is a unique formula, that only has competition from Tempflow (which Tempflow actually uses a formula closest to the original tempur material.)
Review sites that review and rate in some cases on the payroll, owned or are being paid by mattress companies to rate their mattresses in the top 10.
When you look at all of these “review” sites, you will notice that on average, the top 10 are close to the same, unless someone refuses to pay, then the rating either fades into the sunset or drops off completely.
Wife likes Casper snow and Helix Midnight as much as ProAdapt Hybrid. Are they good?
