Big Shout-Out to European Sleep Works in Berkeley, California!

I had the chance to stop by their showroom this weekend, and wow, what an experience! Steve was super knowledgeable, seriously, the guy is like a walking encyclopedia when it comes to mattresses, pillows, and all the little details that make a difference in sleep quality, in addition to all sleep industry related information.

Now, most of you know I’m all about a firm mattress, and I have not
been a huge fan of latex pillows or mattresses. But after visiting European Sleep Works, I had to rethink my whole mindset. Steve’s deep knowledge and hands-on approach really opened my eyes. I tried every mattress in their collection, from their basic Alpine Classic to the Nordic II, and finally, their tufted Heritage, which topped out at just over $5k. When matched to my firmness preferences, I found myself liking them all. But the tufted Heritage (not yet listed on the website) and the Nordic II HDM, with its dual microcoils, natural materials, and well-thought-out design, were simply superb. The attention to detail on the slatted frames they use was something I hadn’t seen before. While they do carry the Eurostyle flexible and manually adjustable slat flexibility, I was particularly impressed by their zero-flex flat slats bed frames that support any mattress with ease.

Even with my weird comfort preferences, Steve worked his magic and created some of the most comfortable sleep setups I’ve ever experienced—yes, even including the Hästens Grand Vividus for $659,000, yes that is the correct price.

Now, I’ll admit, the feel of the Hästens and the mattresses from ESW were both comfortable, but they were definitely different. And that’s a key takeaway: there’s no one-size-fits-all mattress. Everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. It’s not just about picking the right firmness level—it’s about finding what works for your posture, alignment, and pressure points.

When I tried out their Oxygen pillow, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work for me. After a bit of trial and error, with the array of combinations available, I was so impressed, I ended up ordering one. It felt that good! As for their standard topper, I wasn’t finding it firm enough for me, but when he introduced the half-king wedge topper, it totally became an instant game changer.

Since I like to sleep on an incline, my usual two-pillow was the only method I had to get myself comfortable. But with the Oxygen pillow and the wedge topper, It created the perfect alignment while keeping that incline I prefer. It made a huge difference, helped me breathe better, kept my sinuses clear, and allowed me to feel so comfortable on my back, and maintain that comfort when rolling onto my side. Steve was able to ascertain, the way I place an extra pillow on my left side parallel with my body (and how it rolls my body) and when I roll to my right side, tuck my double duvet as a cushion between my knees, rotating me up rather than down to again keep my posture in a comfortable position.

Needless to say, I had to order one of their half-king wedge toppers too. Can’t wait to get it at home and test it out.

If you’re ever in the San Fransisco Bay area and looking to upgrade your sleep setup, I highly recommend giving Steve and European Sleep Works a visit!

All the best,

Maverick
