Me: 5’11 180lb side sleeper. Recently realized my current hand-me-down mattress is just over 30 years old and my search for a replacement led me to here. Current mattress is mildly firm and I’ve had a 2" memory foam sheet on it. This combo worked well for years but now is beyond worn out.
Recently tried a partner’s Birch bed, and found it just a bit too firm/not enough pressure relief, despite sleeping fine. Has led me to pursue a hybrid latex bed myself and have some questions on thickness of the latex layers, as I need to be around 13" to maintain my current bed height.
Proposed Build:
8" Bolsa Coils
2" Blended Talalay Medium (#28)
2" Blended Talalay Soft (#19)
Bamboo/Wool Cover which I understands adds an inch.
Questions:
- Should the Soft layer be 3" given my weight?
- If moving the soft to 3", do I need to also change the medium layer?
- Given my info, are those good starting densities for me?

I just put in an order for the Bolsa springs and both layers of latex.
Am going to be using a waterproof cover over everything until I fine tune things enough to order a cover.
When everything arrives, is it as simple as stacking everything together? My bed frame has slats at just less than 3" spacing. Don’t need anything below the coils, or between the layers?
If you did not get our zippered cover then you will need something under the coils until you do get it. Cardboard, a sleeping bag, etc. A water proof cover will choke off the wonderful airflow, just FYI.

Also good call on the cover - all though Turrmery states it’s breathable. Guess I’ll find out.
Regarding the covers - aside from the thickness - what are the different use cases for the wool vs organic cotton covers?
