Bought too hard of a mattress. Need a topper suggestion

Hello! From some recommendations on this site a few years ago, my wife and I purchased a foam mattress from an online retailer. We are very happy with the quality and service of the company, but when we purchased it we did not take advantage of the return policy despite the mattress being too firm for us. We were getting married at the time and life just happened and we made that mistake. It has now been years later and we still are unhappy with how firm the mattress is. We recently slept at a friends house and he had a yellow foam topper (not sure on type or brand but it was a yellow/goldish color with little holes every few inches) on top of a very firm mattress and it was significantly more comfortable then our bed. This inspired us to look at getting a topper to hold us over until we can afford another mattress.

Do you have any type or thickness recommendations for an affordable topper that would give our bed some more contour/comfort?

Hello Mattressseeker2014

Thank you kindly for your inquiry. It does sound as though all you may need for your firm mattress is a topper. Based on the description of the foam you provided, I believe it to be a latex foam topper. Latex is mostly beige to golden in color, and is produced with holes every couple inches or so. Latex foam is a natural, non-off-gassing product made from rubber derived from rubber trees. Latex is an open-celled foam, which allows it to stay breatheable and therefore sleeps cooler than most toppers.
If the right density is chosen, latex makes for a great topper due to its natural contouring abilities. When placing a topper on a mattress, you usually don’t need more than a 3" thickness. Depending on how much each of you weigh, we normally recommend soft (19-24ILD) or medium (30-33ILD) densities. For example, if each of you weigh less than 180lbs, and are primarily side and/or back sleepers, i would recommend the soft 3" topper.

Please keep us posted with what you decide. Don’t hesitate to ask further questions if need be.

Thank you for the reply!

So my wife and I are side/back sleepers and both <180lbs so I think the soft is the way we want to go. My debate is now whether we need the 3" topper or whether the 2" would do. Any thoughts on how to best choose which option?

Browsing this site it seems that Sleep on Latex and Latex Mattress Factory are consistently recommended. Any preferences between these two or other recommendations?

Also as a double check I believe that a Dunlop latex topper is the best option, but is there a different material you would recommend instead (memory foam, etc…)?

Thank you so much for your assistance on this! My wife and I’s back thank you!

We purchased a Dreamfoam Bedding 2" Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper, model number DF20GT2050 from Amazon. We are very happy with it, it’s like sleeping on a cloud! Definitely worth your consideration.

Choosing between a 2" and 3" layer depends on how much softer and overall contour you are wanting to add to your current mattress. A 2" topper will add just a bit more contour to an already firm mattress, thus creating a plush but supportive feel overall. A 3" topper gives you more of an overall plush feel, and decreases the support due to it being a thicker layer. Latex is the ideal topper due to its breathability, longevity and natural contouring texture.

Both Sleep on Latex and Latex Mattress Factory offer the Dunlop latex, which is of the same quality. Both are reputable companies and offer a great product and great prices. I don’t think you will go wrong choosing either of these companies.

Thanks again, and keep us posted!
