Building my own 3 layer latex mattress ...is 6'' firm, 3'' med and 3'' soft too much?

Hi gang:

Need your input please.
I’m 62, weigh 230lb (am 60lb overweight) and am trying to get down to 170ish.
Sleep mostly on my back but also on my side.
sleep by myself.

I’m about to dump my 20 yr old flippable mattress and go latex.
Thinking of this setup:
Firm base: Dunlop 6’’ (35-40 ILD)
2nd layer: 3’’ talalay latex mid base (26-30 ILD)
3rd layer: 3’’ talalay latex topper (19 ILD) sold to me used but in pristine condition.
Would this work, especially if I’m losing weight? thought that I could always use the supersoft 19 ILD 3’’ topper if my weight does get down to 170-180.

I did try this setup today and it felt fab…but I’m just wondering if I’d flatten out the super soft (19 ILD) 3’’ talalay topper pretty fast with my current weight?

May I ask where did you try that combo out? I am looking at trying to build one.

a store in north vancouver…just layered on a few different 3’’ toppers (soft and super soft Dunlop) onto a med firm 6’’ base

Hey chopstix.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

I know we have folks around here with a similar build to you, and I do hope they chime in.

Yes, you’re going to sink through that soft layer more deeply at your heavier/current weight, but you’re not necessarily going to hurt that Talalay layer simply because you’re heavier unless you’re like. So, your sleeping experience may change as you get lighter. Something to keep in mind.

I’m also going to tag @Arizona_Premium who has much more professional and expert insights into latex than I do

many thanks!..the base layer of Dunlop latex is 6’’ (ILD 35-40)…i just ordered a medium talalay 3’’ topper (26-30 ILD) …so we’re at 9’‘…just wondering if the soft talalay 3’’ topper (ILD 19)
is redundant…or something to keep if i get my weight down under 180?

You just need to regularly flip and rotate the #19 layer and you should be fine.

thanks…I’d rotate/flip each component about every 4-6 months
to ensure longevity.
So having 3 layers adding upt to 12’’ of latex is still fine in your op…will that cause any issues?
