Can we talk about pillows?

Just bought a new mattress yesterday and out of impulse, I grabbed a very expensive pillow from the dealer’s display shelf, not thinking much about it.

The pillow was a BedGear Storm 1.0 that ended up costing me $200.

In the scope of things, when spending $2200 on a well-built mattress, I can almost ignore spending an extra $200 on a quality pillow. I spent nearly that much on a Tempurpedic 10 years ago and it has held up well, though I get neck pain.

Thing is, I got home, and did some research on the Bedgear Storm 1.0 and it turns out it gets mixed reviews.

If I were going to spend $200 on a pillow, I would rather have done some research on the best pillow to buy rather than simply grab one off the shelf out of impulse.

So, here I am.

I am a side sleeper looking for the ultimate pillow. Can anyone recommend one that has served you well?

I haven’t opened my Storm 1.0. Perhaps I should try it before asking for another recommendation, but I have made up my mind that there’s probably something better out there based on the reviews I have already read. And you know what? Maybe you guys will suggest the Storm as the perfect pillow.

Thank you, in advance, for your recommendations

Hey WallyW,

I would not evaluate the pillow by its price. Sometimes you do have to pay more for a better pillow, but paying more doesnt always get you a better pillow.
I tried the bedgrear storm 1, 2 and 3. I actually found them at Home Goods. They had them for 29.98. I found them way too soft for me. I gave all three away to a friend who was really in need of a decent quality pillow and could never afford to spend full price for this type of pillow, He, his wife and daughter love it.

If you notice my thread here on TMU on Pillows, it took me quite a while and run through a lot of different pillows, materials, fills and combinations to find a couple that I found satisfactory.

Depending on how firm your mattress, how tall and how much you weigh, and what you believe your preference actually is, will determine what pillow is best for you. And you may even find that more than one pillow will satisfy you.

I need to sleep with two pillows. I use one as a base (pillows can be much like a mattress, base and comfort layer, with a good cover).
My base pillow is a King Tempurpedic Cloud and Conforming (currently their tempur cloud). My back up base pillow is a King Wool Pillow.

Oh, I am 6’ 220 formerly 250+ when I purchased my new mattress and changed my pillow line up two years ago.

My upper pillow that I consistently use are down to 3. Horsehair pillow, CozyPure Baa-Noodle, and Tempurpedic ProCloud Hi. When it comes to the Baa-Noodle (latex noodles and one side lined with wool) I purchased an extra pound of latex noodles just in case their version of overstuffed wasnt the same as mine. It wasnt, I needed to add noodles as in its original form was too soft and loft was too low. The noodles are extremely comfortable the way it cradles your head. Although, it is latex, it feels completely different than a solid latex pillow, or a shredded latex pillow, which I have in my arsenal. (My wife likes the solid talalay pillow on top of the Tempur Cloud and Conforming base pillow).

My horsehair pillows are stuffed a bit differently, and one I lined with wool batting, another will a layers of latex noodles, but they are overall my favorite. Not as soft and cradling as the CozyPure or the Tempurpedic CloudPro Hi, but for me, the firmness with a slight bit of spring, I like my horsehair.

I will digress here as more information about you is necessary to try and help nail down what you might find best.

By the way, when I took the bedgear quiz, when selecting a medium feel, it selected the Flow Curved Pillow 3, and when I selected I like a firm pillow, it selected the level 3 curved. Last year when I took the quiz it selected the regualar shape Storm 3 and the Cosmo 3. So much for the quiz. I wonder what it will say next year. LOL

Thank you for the wealth of information

I think I am going to look into Talalay or Dunlop latex pillows. They seem to be the most highly recommended for side sleepers.

Just have to wade through the many vendors and reviews to see who is best.

@CST is great if you prefer talalay.

For the last 12 years my wife and I have had CozyPure LaNoodle pillows. Still like new. The newest versions have a zipper and you can add more fill if you want. They have a mattress underground discount, too. We are fortunate to live near the factory, so we were able to try out the mattress and the pillow before purchase. Give Hans a call. Good advice from the folks there. Can’t imagine the pillows won’t last another 15+ years.

For what it’s worth: I very recently bought two 100% horsehair pillows from greenfibers.com in the UK, $200/pillow as shipped to the US. I think they are pretty great/I’m happy with my purchase. I have no idea if any one else would feel the same way, but there you have an option to consider.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I went with Brooklyn Bedding high loft latex pillow. It received excellent reviews, and it’s reasonably priced.

That’s what I have too. I bought it about two years ago and have since bought two more as gifts. I love it. And more importantly, my cat loves it. (She spends about 12 hours a day with her head on my pillow, which with previous pillows was not a thing I ever saw her do once.)

This is good to hear. Wasn’t sure about my choice (who is until you can sleep on the pillow), and it sounds like you are very happy with the brand.
