I have an older Serta “Auburn Falls” hybrid mattress that is listed as “Medium/Plush” pillow top (kind of a misnomer). I am trying to make it work while I am saving up for a new mattress.
Given it’s age - @9 yrs old, it’s held up pretty well, but was always too firm. It has a polyester Pacific Coast mattress cover on it and a Sleep on Latex 3" 19 ILD topper I got because of the firmness.
I am having hip pain on my right side (the side I sleep on most). I am 90% a side sleeper and 10% back sleeper.
I can’t imagine that I am bottoming out the 3" topper, and if I was, I’d be hitting the pillow top, not the coils. The bed is pretty thick at 14" - I think the pillow top is memory foam, the rest some other kinds of foams. No idea what kinds of coils. And I can’t imagine the topper is “too soft”, as it feels too firm to me, but it’s better than sleeping on just the mattress.
I also have been having pain in my butt, but only on the right side, so I think that’s unrelated to the bed as I think it’s piriformous syndrome. I feel it most when I sleep on my back.
Strangely, we took the mattress pad off of the mattress put the topper down, and put the mattress cover over that, and my hip felt better, but I couldn’t sleep on it because it was way too stiff. So we took the mattress cover off and put the topper under the sheet so it doesn’t slide around as much, and I slept better last night but still woke up with mild hip pain on my right side, but when I end up on my back, my shoulder hurts…
I’ve been contemplating getting a 14 ILD Talalay topper to see if that will stop the hip pain. But I don’t want to spend $400 - $500 if this is going to make things worse.
I am 5’3", 115lbs for reference.
All of this makes me nervous about trying to choose the right bed next time. Can anyone give me a hint as to what might be causing this pain?
