Determining best mattress for myself and spouse

My husband and I moving in a few months and will be replacing our king sized mattress either at the time of move, or may do it early and just replace now.

Current mattress is a Brooklyn Bedding full foam mattress. It’s mostly comfortable, but, we both sink into it and often wake up with neck pain. We also both sleep insanely hot in it. It’s really not that rare for me to wake up basically drenched in sweat.

On top of this we do have 2 20lb dogs that insist on sleeping with us.

Him: M, late 30s, 5’8”, 200lb. Side sleeper
Me: M, late 30s, 5’6”, 130lb. Side sleeper.

We originally started thinking we wanted firm, since we sink into the current mattress, but as we have tried more mattresses we found we want plush; but that has good support under.

We have found a few mattresses we liked:

  • Vispring Cashmere with king opulence topper
    • this one seemed kind of cranky that we would be on slats in our frame. Does that really matter?
  • Avocado Ultra Plush
  • Aireloom Karpen Dove Plush
    • We also liked the Aireloom M2 plush, but liked the above better.

So:
Is there a reason to go with one of these vs others?
Is there something else we should look at? Price isn’t an issue, but we also don’t want to needlessly spend money either

Hi Paladin732,

You have done a wonderful job narrowing down your choices. While Brooklyn Bedding manufacturers some nice mattresses, moving away from all foam, and kicking it up several notches is going to improve your sleep for a long time. Initially, it may take some getting used to, regardless of your final choice, as the feel of what you have been used to it quite a bit different than these new very fine choices.

Yes, the foundation absolutely matters. Vispring mattresses, including the Cashmere Plush, are handcrafted and designed to provide optimal support and comfort. A high-quality foundation (or bed base) helps preserve the integrity of the mattress by offering the proper support, which can extend its lifespan. For this mattress, I would be sticking with a matching VS foundation.

Regarding the Avocado, they have stepped up their game recently. I am a little surprised with ultra plush over the Plush for him at 200lbs. I would think that once the mattress starts to break in and you begin to adjust, you may find the ultra too soft. Plus that 19" mattress makes it a bit rough with fitting sheets to it.

While the Aireloom, is a beautiful mattress, I can’t help but think, the weak is the foam encased perimeter edge foam. That edge is likely to break down at some point. Some swear by it, but I objectively, still cant bet past it, and for that price range, there are better choices.

The European Sleep Works Heritage and Nordic II are two very supportive mattresses that offer quality materials and a firmness that is available with a firmness that will offer the support that you need and the plush feel that you like. Particularly the Nordic 2 with its very plush and conforming microcoils. Plus, their slatted frame is a game changer in support. It is built to last with no flex, center support running down the middle. This foundation is a solid as you are ever going to see and matches up with perfectly with the mattress.

Hopefully, some food for thought.

All the best,

Maverick

Thank you!

This is quite helpful.
I’ll take a look at European Sleep Works Heritage.

I was hoping you said the foundation didn’t matter as much, but figured there was a high chance you would.

(For Vispring, not sure if you can answer: but what is an ideal % off msrp? The store went right to 30%, which makes me think 40% or 50% are possible)

ViSpring? They dont give more than 30% off, but it doesnt hurt to ask!!!

I think the Aireloom M2 Plush is a side sleepers dream!!! They also have M2 Plush Plus where they add a latex mattress cover. Go search for Richard on youtube at “Aireloom Mattress Reviews” on youtube.

I would also check out BackScience3. Very plush with support!

Also, go check out post “Ordered Vispring Cashmere Superb”.

If you like Vispring Cashmere without the divan, get it. They can let you try it without the divan. It is designed to work with the divan though.

John

Yep! I saw that one, it was quite useful to read.

We would love for you to look at our Kiwi mattress and our 2" organic latex topper for an organic option.

Sure, happy to look. Can you compare it to the Avocado and Naturepedic? (We are swinging over there today to look in person)

Hello Paladin,

We offer the Vispring mattresses - and occasionally, I have seen them go for 30% off on sale, but not more than that. If you can go with a lesser topper, there are times when a complimentary Heaven topper is offered with the purchase of a queen or king mattress - not the Opulence topper that you mentioned. But if you could be happy with the Heaven topper, you could save some money that way.

In terms of spring mattresses, Vispring is one of the best around. The Cashmere Superb is particularly luxurious, and of course, you can customize the firmness/tension, which is a big plus.

In terms of the slats, they recommend no more than 3" apart - and of course, a Vispring divan will support it perfectly. From their care instructions:

** Don’t use a Vispring mattress on a base with slats more than 7.5cm apart (3”). If you are using a slatted base, we’d recommend using a mattress pad to minimise wear.*
** Don’t use a Vispring mattress on a worn-out divan or old bed base. It will shorten the life of your mattress and might void the guarantee.*

Hope this helps you in your search. If we can be of service, give us a call.

The shop told me the cashmere is on sale right now with the factory throwing in the opulence. Is that not correct? Maybe he told me the wrong topper?

So if I use slats, will I not have a problem? I’m doing a Molteni bed frame with slats and storage; one of my concerns was having to do a Divan instead.

Each shop is different - so maybe just doublecheck with them on the topper. I cannot tell you what an individual shop is able to do - if you can get the Opulence, by all means, go for it. The shop may be under some different circumstances or agreements.

I’m not familiar with the Molteni, but again, perhaps check with the person you are working with. What I gave you here was from the Vispring website and what we generally tell our customers, but again, each shop is a little different, so I would hesitate to overrule what they are telling you, especially since an insufficient foundation can damage the mattress and negate the warranty.

Thanks! Sorry for the delay in response.
I ended up leaning towards the Tiara. My husband and I can’t really tell much difference between it and the Cashmere, and there is a substantial price differential between them.

The best we have been able to negotiate is about 40% off the full bundle, and that includes the topper that is mostly free to the store with the current sale from Vispring (as far as I know it’s just the upgrade cost to go from heaven to opulence)
If I exclude that; it’s only ~28% off.

Thoughts on anything to do to get a bit better price? I don’t really mind buying from out of state. The best price I’ve gotten is from the middle of the country.

Is it worth it to buy from the middle of the country? Can they offer customer support from there?

John

Yep, what support will I really need anyway?

Im not sure.

Exchanges and returns I suppose.
Switching out toppers.

I know that Hastens has a team that will refresh the horsehair toppers. Im not sure what ViSpring does.

John

Vispring has technicians that will travel to your home and service your mattress. For instance, if a tuft becomes loose, they will come out and repair it.
