DIY 9" Mattress - help configuring layers for 2 sleepers

Hi,
I’m 5’9" and 280lb, my wife 5’5" and 140lb.
Since there is a big difference between us I was thinking of doing a split mattress like this:

ME: 3" 100% natural Talalay Soft (IDL 19) on top of 6" Organic Dunlop Firm (IDL 36)
HER: 3" 100% natural Talalay X-Soft (IDL 14) on top of 6" Organic Dunlop Med-Firm (IDL 31)

What do you guys think? Since I’m building this myself with a zippered cover I want to guess right on the first try but I guess that might not be possible :slight_smile:

Based on the information you so kindly provided, I would recommend a bit more support for the both of you: At 280lbs, if you are primarily a side and/or back sleeper, I would recommend a Medium (28-32ILD) Talalay over Firm Dunlop over Firm Dunlop (36-40ILD) configuration. Over the years we have come to the realization that most people that weigh more than 200lbs do not prefer a soft layer in their mattress. Over time a soft layer can break down a bit quicker for customer heavier than 200lbs, which can also cause back pain from lack of support, and too much contour. The Medium Talalay on top should provide you with plenty of contour, while the firms below provide the support you will need.
For her, I would recommend a standard Soft Talalay over medium over firm configuration. We have found that this standard configuration is most popular for side and/or back sleepers that weigh between 100lbs and 180(ish) lbs. The soft on top will provide similar contour for her that the medium will for you at your respective weights.
If you would like to try these configurations at a local store, I recommend googling the nearest Savvy Rest. Savvy Rest has locations all over the country, and may have one near you. They offer a 9" (three 3" layer) latex mattress, which you can try any combination of Dunlop and Talalay in all densities.
