DIY Build questions for a big beggi@ner

Hello all, I’ve been spending a concerning amount of time here and on reddit for the last couple weeks. I’m in the thick of building a new mattress. I’m almost purely a side sleeper (6’5" 325) who prefers a medium-plush mattress and my wife (5’6" 185) who prefers a soft bed and is a combo sleeper mostly falls asleep on her stomach and wakes up on her back.

We trashed a ghost memory foam (slept incredibly hot) topper in favor of a 3" SoL latex medium topper. Waiting on a 1" SoL soft latex topper as the wife prefers a softer mattress. I’ve zoned a 3" soft latex area for my shoulders which has greatly decreased my tossing and turning, upper back pain, and tightness all while sleeping much cooler.

Phase II of my plan involves replacing my old helix mattress with DIY support layers. My current plan is to scavenge the helix zipper cover (10") and refill with:

  • 1" Lux HQ foam (50 ILD) -support
  • 8" TPC 14.75G coils -support
  • 1" HQ 36 foam (36 ILD) -transition

Comfort layers again (in a stretchy cotton SoL topper cover)

  • 3" medium SoL foam (with a 3" soft shoulder zone on one side)
  • 1" soft SoL foam

Specifically, I’m hoping for input on whether or not this set-up will be supportive enough for me (with enough give to avoid hip and shoulder pain) while not being horrendously over firm for my wife. I’m also a professional student and she’s a teacher so we don’t have the largest budget for trial and error hence the back and forth.

Any advice regarding coil gauge would be very helpful. Foam choices for the support piece are also up in the air. I’d very much like to know if I’m completely off base or headed in the right direction. (This is in a sense very similar to the Engineered Sleep Duo Latex plus)

Thanks all!

This is a tough one. For you the 14.75. For your wife she is best with the 15.5.

what size mattress are you building? if its a king you can do two twin xls, one 14.75 and one 15.5.

hope this was helpful.
