I’m looking at getting a split king (two twin XL mattresses). The main goal is reduced motion transfer. However, I’m not sure about mattresses with extra edge support, for instance with firmer coils or firmer foam near the edge. As an example, I’m looking at the Luma Mattress with 2" of latex on top 6" of pocketed coils, which has firmer coils near the edge.
If I put two such twin XL mattresses side by side, would I feel the seam between the two mattresses more compared to mattresses without edge support (e.g. plain latex)? It seems like there would be a firmer area in the middle of the bed that would be hard to roll over.
Or maybe the edge support would actually be a good thing, to reduce the chance of feeling like I was sinking into the split? Does anyone have experience with configuring a split king with mattresses that have edge support?
I don’t know if I have a good answer but we recently went from an all latex king size mattress to two naturepedic pillow tops in twinXL with adjustable bases. While I love the adjustable base it is a terrible decision to have two twinXL mattresses.
Problem #1) No one we ordered from sent a twinXL that was 80" long. We had a total of 7 mattresses sent from 3 different manufacturers. If you are tall this is a terrible thing. You try to sleep diagonally, you sleep with your feet over hanging or you sleep with your head over handing and the pillow mashed in between the mattress and the headboard for support. My shoulder is often 3" below the top of the mattress with the pillow bridging a several inch gap between it and the headboard in order to allow my feet to be supported.
Problem #2) Due to the edge support there is only a tiny are of the mattress in the middle that isn’t edge support. So there is very little sleeping area. Your arm dangles off the mattress. Your hand sinks into the crack between the two. Your leg is in the crack between the two. It is like sleeping on a little kids bed. TwinXL mattreses are simply too narrow for an adult with adult sized limbs.
Problem #3) No matter what you do the crack keeps opening up in the middle. There is a ridge there where the two mattress fit together and the dog falls into it. The mattress work their way apart etc. We have separate bedding due to the adjustable bed so maybe you could get an after market crack filler but without it the edges of the mattress curve down due to the casing and creak a crack.
If I had known all this before buying the bases, new sheets, and new mattress pads i would have gotten fullXL mattresses with full sized adjustable bases. However not many places make fullXL mattresses and there aren’t many sheet options etc. for them. Unfortunately two queen mattresses would not have fit our bedroom. I might have been able to get away with a queen and a twinXL but it would have been a tight fit.
I don’t know how much edge support is on the naturepedic mattresses but it says full perimeter. Which means my should is in or bordering on the edge support most nights. Due to the two layer of microcoils I don’t feel it. Same with the edge support on the sitting edge of the bed. However I’m probably getting some benefit from it when I sit on the bed but it isn’t noticeable. In terms of between the two mattress, neither of us ventures into that zone. Not even the dogs like it as they fall into it. They want to be either fully on one or the other mattresses which makes it very crowded.
Sam’s club also had a great price on adjustable bases.
We went through walmart.com because they had a great return policy for the bases. Sam’s club also has a great return policy. Both places gave plenty of time and would come pick them up.
Yes very quiet. You can’t really hear it. You have to feel it moving to notice it is moving.
My mom was surprised when I bought her one as she was used to the old style hospital beds.
I love the adjustable bed and will never be without one. I had no idea they were so inexpensive when we bought ours. I thought they would cost a fortune.
I adjusted my bed in the middle of the night and could hear a slight whiring sound. It did not wake up my husband. So it isn’t completely silent but it is very small and after a while you don’t notice it, just like I wasn’t noticing it.
