Dormio vs. Spindle

Hi all,

I’ve done a ton of research and I’m ready to purchase my first latex mattress. I’ve narrowed my options down to two, both of which I think are good: the Dormio Grande mattress and the Spindle mattress in medium firmness.

I tried the Dormio Grande in stores yesterday and LOVED it. It has a great feel and I think it’s right for me. 2" soft Dunlop, 6" medium Dunlop, then 2" firm Dunlop (all traditionally-melded latex). The only downside is that they’re currently looking at 3-4 weeks for delivery and I need a new mattress ASAP - my current mattress is impacting my sleep.

I’m also looking at the Spindle mattress in medium (medium, medium, firm - all 3", all continuous pour Dunlop), which I’m told is the option that would most closely resemble the Dormio Grande. With shipping to Canada, this mattress falls right in line with the Grande price-wise (no significant savings), but it would be at my doorstep in about 5 business days. However, I’m a bit nervous about ordering a mattress I haven’t tried before - I’ve laid in a bunch of latex options (including Dormio and Natura - I prefer the Dormio Grande to both their higher-cost options and the Natura) and prefer a soft comfort layer and no wool layer (not a deal-breaker, but a preference).

Phoenix, do you have any insight or advice for either of these mattresses? I know you think highly of them both.

Hi FromRachel.

I think that just about every person who buys a mattress or is a member of our forum has wrestled with a similar scenario which is all about how to choose between “good and good” choices. The best news is that you have eliminated all your worst choices and in terms of quality and durability and it would be difficult to make a mistake. As you are well aware both Dormio and Spindle are our Trusted members that I think very highly of and are amongst the the best in the industry in terms of quality or their products, value, service, knowledge, and transparency.

The bad news is that even with good or great mattresses to choose between final choices are not always easy to make … especially when it involves a combination of objective, subjective, and intangible factors that can be difficult to attach a “value” to or when the differences in “value” between them seems very small. The good news is that any of your choices are better than what the large majority of people end up purchasing and in terms of quality and value there are really no “bad choices” or “mistakes” left any more and when you are at this point and there are no clear winners between your finalists then the odds are high that any one of them would be a good choice that you would be happy with.

Regarding the Dormio Mattress that will take 3-4 weeks to deliver I would look at it this way.
• You will have this mattress for 10+ years, so that’s at least 520 weeks.
• If the difference in delivery is 2 weeks, then it’s a total of 2/520 (0.4% of the time your will have it)
If you know that Dormio is what you want an that this is the best fit for you in terms of your personal needs and preferences, then the challenge is to figure out what to do for the added 2 weeks.

Spindle offers a 1 year comfort adjustment Spindle Mattress for up to $200 and this should remove your risk, as you can adjust it if it’s not exactly what you want, but as you are Canada based it may cost you a little extra time and money to get things just right. I would suggest that you give Spindle a call and speak with them directly about your concern and see what they have to say. They are extremely experienced and always strive to get things right for their customers.

If you chose to go with Dormio then you would need focus on what do for the additional 2 weeks to manage and improve your sleep.

I’m looking forward to learning about your decision
