Eco Sleep Hybrid coils and foundation questions

Hi @Arizona_Premium, I’m hoping you might be able to provide some advice.

(Or anyone else, of course, that has experience with this product and wants to chime in!)

We’re considering the Eco Sleep hybrid for our college son. But we are struggling to determine whether to go with the Caliber or Bolsa coils.

He’s about 6’1", probably around 175lbs.
He sleeps mostly on his side, occasionally on his stomach (although he says he’s “moving away from it”).
For firmness level, he’s not very confident that he knows what he prefers but he thinks probably “medium”. He’s “never tried firm”, so he doesn’t know if more firm would be even better. But he does know that he doesn’t like soft - he doesn’t want to feel like he’s sinking in to the mattress.

So I was thinking going with:

  • #28 Medium comfort layer
  • Quantum Edge Elite Bolsa coils

But my question is: I’m wondering if the 8" Bolsa coils might give him that “sinking in” feeling, and we should instead go with the Caliber 6" coils?

My thought was that the Bolas coils will be better since he’s predominantly a side sleeper, but then I started to wonder if he’ll feel like he’s “sinking in” with those coils vs the Calibers. I’ll appreciate your thoughts on which coils might work best for him.

My wife and I have been sleeping on a full latex mattress for years - which I did a ton of research on (thanks to Mattress Underground!), so I’m more familiar with full latex mattress feel/support. I realize the “feel” is different with a spring core, but to just give me a general idea I can relate to…
Could you maybe equate the Bolsa 8" and Caliber 6" coils to their most similar latex counterpart?

And I also have a completely separate question… about his bed foundation…

His bed has 2" slats that are more than 3" apart. Unfortunately it’s not here at our house so I can’t measure the exact distance, but my guess from memory would be that they are likely around 4"-4.5" apart. (The slats are all connected by a “ribbon” of material, so wouldn’t be easy to alter the distance between them.)

I’m wondering which solution you’d recommend for getting proper foundation support for the Eco Sleep, and that would still maintain the warranty:

  • add additional slats - maybe 1" or 1.5" slats - between all the existing slats, to result in maybe 1.5"-1.75" space between all slats
  • completely remove the provided slats and replace with 3"-4" slats at a spacing < 3" apart
  • put a coconut coir mat down (or similar - recommendations?) over the existing slats
  • some other solution

Thanks in advance!
Joel

Thanks for reaching out to us. So here’s the thing, side sleepers need it to give in the hips and shoulders to relieve the pressure points. Based on the info I believe he would do best on the Bolsa with the Medium Talalay. This will give both support and pressure relief. The easiest and best way to fix the slats is just to add more reducing the spacing. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the quick response and confirmation that Bolsa is indeed the way to go for him (as a primarily side sleeper). And we’ll just add slats to his bed. I just need to share this info with him and make sure he’s still good with the Eco Sleep, and then we’ll order his new mattress.

Thanks for your help.

My pleasure and thanks for choosing us.

Ended up purchasing the Eco Sleep Hybrid mattress with Bolsa coils and medium topper (for our college junior son’s new apt) on Wednesday. Thanks again for your help!

He does fairly well in school, but I wonder if sleeping on a really good mattress (rather than the awful dorm and furnished apt mattresses) will help take him up a notch. LOL JK
