Fine tuning DIY Latex Hybrid for hip pain plushness

Hello all -

I built this bed in June, a King size hybrid using Latex Mattress Factory layers.

2" Talalay Soft (19ILD)
2" Dunlop Soft (19ILD)
6" Dynamic Edge Coils (unknown firmness?)

The layers are sitting on a king size sheet of cardboard directly on the bed slats. Nothing is encased yet, just a mattress protector and bed sheets.

It’s just not there yet. It feels good, but I’m looking for more plushness / pressure relief. I’m 5’9" 200lbs, mostly muscular/athletic, just lots of muscle and lots of injuries over the years. I used to be a belly sleeper, now mostly back and side, but toss and turn a lot due to pain. I used to like firm mattresses, but nearly 10 years of progressively worsening hip pain and recurring shoulder injuries, I now feel much more comfortable on plush’y mattresses.

Just recently I tried the Aireloom M1 Plush Luxetop and WOW, that was magical. The sales rep said that the Firm version sells more, and being heavier the Firm would feel better for me, but I laid in the Plush for nearly 45 minutes and nothing hurt, I was just in a cloud.

So I’m thinking of adding plush to make my DIY build similar to that by:

  • Adding a 2" layer of wool
  • Adding a quilted cotton + wool case for the whole mattress

How do I best replicate a cool but plushy top layer? Should I consider other options? Microcoils? Just buy the $4k+ Aireloom?

Thanks!

M1 Plush might work, but your alignment is probably bad while back sleeping. Your back wont get enough support. Id look into the M1 Firm or M2 Firm. Those are still plenty soft, but supportive. There is also the Streamline models with Aireloom also.

Id also look into BackScience 2 (Luxury Firm) or BackScience 3(Plush). I went to the Ultrabed/BackScience showroom in Agoura Hills to check them out. The spinal alignment is absolutely phenomenal! The words “BackScience” evokes feeling of firmness and stiffness, but the mattresses are soft and plush, but have great support and spinal alignment. Plush, but with support? Hard to believe, but its true!!!

Oh no way, I’m in Santa Barbara and the Back Science store is only an hour away. Amazing, thank you so much for the recommendation.

Plus, @BackScience will modify the mattress if something is not quite right. They are good at that. They aim to target your precise needs. Just ask the questions, don’t make assumptions.

I just saw the post and we would love to have you visit the factory store in Agoura Hills and see what it is all about. We carry Aireloom at the store as well, so you can even compare and decide what you like best as John mentioned (by the way I like the @BillyIdol reference John

It is the Ultrabed Mattress Store in Agoura Hills and we are open 7 days a week from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.
Thanks!
