firm topper

I am lookin g for a way to make a pillowtop mattress more firm. We recently bought a Saatva luxury firm mattress and my wife foun d out that she needs something firmer. Is there any product that can go on top of this pillowtop mattresss that will make it firmer? Someone suggested ripping the pillowtop off but that isn’t a viable option for Mr. Handman here.

Hello Kizman

Thank you kindly for your inquiry. Adding a firm latex layer on top of a soft pillow top mattress may only provide a very small amount of extra support. The reason for this is that a topper (even a firm one) is not attached to the mattress at all, and will therefore ā€˜hug’ or contour to your body more than your actual mattress will. This creates a more contouring mattress surface, and could end up defeating the purpose. Plus adding a firm layer on top of a pillowtop makes that firm layer feel even softer.

I would have to agree that the only way to ensure that you eliminate the pillowtop feel and add more support is to remove the pillowtop all together or simply start over with a firmer mattress. There are DYI options that allow you to create and personalize your mattress to fit your needs. We offer all-natural latex foam in 2" and 3" layers. Kizman,

How do you define firmness?

I always have a hard time pointing people in the right direction because definitions of soft and firm can very so much, especially in regards to support. Firmness and support really aren’t as tied together as it may seem. For example, we carry foams that are actually very soft (between 10-16 IFD) but actually have higher support than foams with higher IFDs.

There’s an actual measurement for support factor, and while it utilizes IFD measurements, the results include far more information about the properties of the foam than simple softness or firmness, notable density and the overall chemistry of the foam. Bottom line: YES, you can buy a topper of some sort that will add ā€œfirmnessā€ to your bed. But, it probably won’t add any support to the mattress because the topper would still be placed on the pillow top, which the firm topper will simply sink into and probably further flatten. This is the whole downside with adding toppers to old mattresses - they can often just be band-aids that cover the main issue for a while, but really don’t heal the wound.

All that to say, I’d agree Latex Mattress Factory in that the best course of action is a new mattress.
