Frustrating mattress journey

Hi guys, new member here.
I am so glad I found TMU, I went through many articles and tutorials, and it has already been so informative.

I wanted to ask, is it normal to feel cervical and lumbar pain literally after every time we try mattresses at the store? It has happend at every step (see below for our experience). Even after reading TMU tutorials, I feel hopeless as everytime we go shopping for a new mattress, it is so hard to assess what feel due to pain and stiffness when we get home. It is interesting, because after 2 days of using our existing 15 year old mattress (BR Simmons classic) the pain resolves. Neither me or wife have any prior pre-existing back issues, or surgeries. Our posture isn’t perfect (probably have some mild to moderate lordosis), but it is not that bad!

My journey:
We have had a BR Simmons classic for many years and it did the job, wasn’t that great but it was fine. Due to some sagging, last year I started my search for a better mattress with a much higher budget. However, we continue to use our old mattress as all the new mattresses we have tried, led to more pain unfortunately.

I’m an exclusive side sleeper; 5’11 and 210 lb
Spouse mainly side sleeper, occasional back sleepr; 5’4, 105 lb

We have tried the followings:

  1. Bloomingdale’s Kluft and Shifman mattresses, returned each of them after a month due to cervical and lumbar pain
  2. Duxiana 6006 (we really wanted this to work), paid lots of money, waited for 3 months to get it delivered. We tried this mattress for 4 months (with different Cassette variations, for each combo we allowed 2 weeks of “getting used to it” ). Unfortunately, we both had horrible cervical and lumbar pain, so much that it was impairing our daily mobility!! We initially loved the feeling of Dux bed at the store, but it was just horrible after we owned it. Every night we tossed and turn. At the end, we even asked Dux reps to send an inspector and check the coils, which was not damaged as per inspector.
  3. Then recently, we almost fell for the “Labor day sale” gimmick of Mattress-Firm and nearly bought the BR Black series 3 (Medium), but luckily I stumbled upon on TMU, literally last night, and held off!!! Even today, I am feeling bad cervical pain from 45 min of trying 4-5 mattresses at their store. So strange.

I am making plans to visit both Shovlin and Orange Mattresses as I live in NJ. But I feel so hopeless. I see that others have tried VISPRING system, however, I prefer not to make a trip to NYC (in NJ, the RH (Restoration hardware) sells some version of VISPRING, but their version is not listed on the main website).
Please let me know if you have any other stores I should try as my next steps.
Thank you!

Hi ENZ, Welcome to the Mattress Underground!

I’m sorry to hear that you have experienced pain and stiffness with the mattresses you have been trying.

I wanted to mention that we have a location in Mount Kisco, NY that has almost the complete line of Vispring mattresses, as well as other models that you could try. Kind of a one-stop shop! It is an easy drive from NJ. Here is a link to our locations page.

Hi ENZ,

Welcome to the community! I’m really glad you’ve found TMU helpful so far. It sounds like you’ve been on quite a journey with mattress shopping, and I can understand why you’d be feeling frustrated.

Why the Pain?

Mattress Testing vs. Home Use: Testing mattresses in-store can be misleading because you’re not in your typical sleeping environment and might be using the mattress for only a few minutes. It can be hard to gauge long-term comfort and support in such a short period. Additionally, the in-store mattresses might be slightly different from what you receive at home.

Case in point. I am extremely familiar with Shifman Mattresses as I live here in NJ too. The Shifman you try in a Macys or Bloomingdales are not the same versions that you would try in an Independent store like Brielle Furniture in Monmouth County.
Here is one example (Shifman at Bloomingdales) Look at product details paragraph 3

SUPPORT DETAILS:
A layer of high-profile coils backed by a foam encased edge deliver support across and at the edge of the mattress, providing consistent comfort from edge to edge of the mattress.

Not one mattress I could find on the Shifman website or at the Las Vegas Market trade show last month uses foam encased edge support. The all use edge to edge coil support layers. This is a video on edge support and the various options that companies use. Kluft uses this style of edge support as well, both for Bloomingdales and a variety of their corporate independent mattresses. This perimeter foam edge support design is a Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Neiman Marcus requirement.

I want to emphasize this for a few reasons. First, it demonstrates that mattresses designed for department stores, even high-end ones, are often customized to meet specific requirements. While this doesn’t imply that the manufacturer uses subpar components, it does reveal that the construction may be altered to achieve a certain showroom appearance and align with a particular price and profit margin.

Additionally, and please don’t take this the wrong way, Shifman is one of the finest mattress brands available. However, it would be shocking to hear that none of their mattresses from their corporate website would not meet your preferences. While there are several options in the same price range, including some higher and lower-priced models, they are all of high quality, with only minor differences in performance. Brands like ViSpring, Royalpedic, Savoir, Hästens, and Chatham and Wells, along with independent manufacturers such as @ShovlinMattress, Orange Mattress, and Charles Beckley, also offer excellent products.I would be additionally surprised if any of these options would not have something that would meet your specific needs for personal preference, posture, alignment, and pressure relief (PPP).

(Now that I have made the above comment, I will add this. “The best mattress in the world is only the best if it works for you”) If you are not comfortable, cost, materials, notoriety, all mean nothing.

@TheCleanBedroom carries a few of these higher end luxury brands, and a short trip into NY may be worth the addition ride, along with @ShovlinMattress and Orange Mattress.

Sometimes, new mattresses do require a bit of time to break in, and your body needs time to adjust. However, experiencing severe pain is a sign that something might be off. Even a month on a mattress may not be a suitable amount of time. So whatever mattress you try, you need to consider giving it a bit more time, provided you have the option to bail out within whatever the trial period is being offered.

Given your mild lordosis and that of your wife, it’s possible that some of the mattresses you’ve tried are not providing the proper support or alignment for your specific body types and sleeping positions.

Since you live in NJ, visiting a store like Shovlin or Orange Mattresses is a good step. Both are known for their range and expertise. It might be beneficial to have a detailed consultation with their staff to discuss your specific needs and issues.

Besides Shovlin and Orange, consider visiting any other high-end or specialty mattress stores although you may have to venture into NY to a few of the stores mentioned.

An adjustable base might help you find a more comfortable position and alleviate some of the pressure points. This might be especially useful if you’re experiencing discomfort with certain types of mattresses. Not all mattresses can be used in conjunction with an adjustable base, so bet sure to consult your mattress professional when looking at those options.

If you’re still having trouble, you might want to look into custom mattresses. Some companies, such as Shovlin, Orange and Beckley, specialize in creating mattresses tailored to individual needs and preferences.

As a temporary solution, consider trying a high-quality mattress topper. A good topper might help bridge the gap between your current mattress and new ones you’re trying, and potentially alleviate some of the discomfort.

Make sure any mattress you buy has a generous sleep trial period. This way, you can return it if it doesn’t work out without too much hassle.

One more bit of advice. While most of the manufacturers and retailers mentioned are considered high end or luxury producers, you may find your mattress home in something like a @DLX Premier Hybrid or LatexLux or and Engineered Sleep offering.

It is certainly true those “higher end” nameplates, do use materials like horsehair, cashmere, organic wool, cotton and other old school quality materials, fibers and natural foams, which are known for durability, longevity and comfort, the answer does not always reside there.

Don’t lose hope! Finding the right mattress can be a bit of a quest, but with patience and the right approach, you’re likely to find something that works for you.

Sorry for the lengthy response, but I’m confident you’ll find a solution.

Remember, the mattress alone doesn’t create a comfortable bedding system. An adjustable base can enhance comfort significantly, and don’t overlook the importance of your pillow. As your mattress firmness, sleeping position, and preferences evolve, your pillow choice might need to change as well. Lastly, bed linens can also impact your sleep quality. I recently tried DreamFit sheets, 100% Egyptian Cotton, that I came across at the Vegas Trade Show last month, and I must say, they’ve made a noticeable difference. These sheets fit perfectly and snugly, keeping my 3" organic wool topper in place and making my mattress feel firmer than with other sheet sets. This improvement was evident right from the first night and was something my wife and I commented to each other the first morning.

All the best and good luck finding your perfect match.

Thank you both for your replies. @Maverick I really appreciate the detailed response, very helpful; thanks for being generous with your time. I will definitely keep those tips in mind. My next steps will be to visit @ShovlinMattress, Orange and TheCleanBedroom. I also did some reddit search, it seems that most people are pretty happy with @ShovlinMattress quality and durability.
I will write an update as I make further progress and will compare my experience to previous mattresses that I have tried. Thanks again.

@Maverick thanks for all the help but I’m losing hope here!
I have checked out @TheCleanBedroom (Mt Kisco), we did not like the ViSpring beds at all unfortunately. Interestingly there was no return policy, which we also did not like.
@ShovlinMattress had more latex option but did not feel great, they had better return policy for a few and also exchange policy. Any further advice is appreciated. I may need to take a chance on something with a return policy and try it out for a months. This is so frustrating. Hopefully others have better luck

I will defer back to one part of my response where I mentioned DLX. It is the mattress I chose for my 86yo mother in law after the BeautyRest crapped out in less than one year and a couple of months. The mattress is super comfortable for her on the firm side (I ordered a split queen firm/med) and her hip and knee pain from her replacement surgeries are gone. She occasionally experiences some back pain due to her spinal cancer diagnosis, but no mattress can fix that. I know that you can not try the DLX premier hybrid in a store, unless you live in upstate western new york at a Jamestown Mattress Location, but the mattress is so manipulable, you have the option to swap with HD foam in 3 feel levels, or Latex in 4 feel levels or even memory foam. You can also split the internal comfort layers. So the combinations are quite varied.

You dont always have to spend 10k on a mattress to feel comfortable enough as if it were a 10k mattress. I know it is tempting to feel more secure with the idea of a super high end mattress, but at the end of a long tiring day, you just want to be comfortable in the bed.

@BackScience could be another option. Their trial is ridiculously long and their mattresses were designed by a Chiropractor who has done years of research to develop a mattress not just for folks with back problems, but simply a comfortable mattress. Not too many folks offer trials or warranties like Backscience or DLX. I know the folks at DLX are quite modest and will often suggest if you were comfortable on a mattress, just repeat the purchase.

I tend to have a difference of opinion on this point. Over the years, some mattress companies, particularly the S brands or legacy brands as they have become know, have changed they materials, build and construction of their mattresses. In many cases, they do not mimic the mattresses of yesteryear. For example, I just watch a video on the new line of BeautyRest Mattresses that Mike, from Goodbed was “reviewing” and they have gone from their BLCK (clever - black series) now to Series 1, 2, 3, and 4. He trying to demonstrate all the improvements, etc. etc. Wait, what, improvements? For years they have been telling you there is nothing better out there. Now, adding more memory foam to their upper end series is the improvement, or some new “cooling” cover. Look, I am not here to criticize BR. Some folks like them, some even love them. Good for them. My personal take is that they are “overfoamed” (my made up terminology) and over priced because they are needlessly overfoamed. Ok, I said it.

Sometimes less is more. Make it to what your needs are. The two companies I just mentioned offer a lot of configuration options. Yes, it is a risk, and a pain, you have to buy on specs, or someone else’s suggestion based on your input and their interpretation. You will sit around until delivery worrying whether it will work, the nerves are working overtime. How is it much different than anything else we do in life? Wow, that Jaguar fell superb on the test drive, smooth as silk, 9 months in, the transmission is giving you a hard time, or the electrical system. Perhaps there is a recall.

What I can say with confidence is, the Trusted Members at TMU have dedicated their lives to understanding and interpreting what makes folks comfortable for a good nights sleep. They are not fly by night sales folks that work in a random retail store. The majority have been doing this most of their lives. Will they get it right 100% of the time. When you find someone, I will buy that lottery ticket.

For most folks there is a formula that leads to comfort. High quality, dense foams, natural fibers, certain combinations of synthetic fibers, a formula that translates to success more that 90% of the time. This is the average first choice success rate of Trusted Members of TMU. Speak with one of these folks and let them guide you. Shovlin and TCB were great options, but not your preferred choice. Take what you learned there, speak with @DLX or @BackScience, whose mattress options are quite different than Shovlin and TCB. There are other options, do not despair, we will help you get there.

All the best,

Maverick

Hi again,

Thank you for taking the time to check out beds at our showroom in Mount Kisco!
I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you, but certainly there is nothing like trying something out in person to know whether it works for you or not.

You probably know this from your visit, but to be clear - yes, it is true that a Vispring mattress cannot be returned, since they are custom made to order. However they do have a comfort promise, so if you need a different firmness, you can swap out during the first 90 days:

"However, if you find that you have made the wrong choice of mattress spring tension, you may make a one-time exchange of your mattress for one of a different spring tension. "

Thanks again for checking us out, and we certainly wish you well and hope you find the best mattress for you!

Good afternoon ENZ,

If after that we still cannot get you comfortable we will come pick up the mattress and give you a full refund.

I would be happy to chime in here and see if I can offer some additional clarity about what the issue might be. First, I want to say how fortunate we are that we have experts on the team like Maverick who put such an incredible amount of time and effort into trying to find that perfect match for each member…you can feel how much care and support go into each response. With that said, from my 20+ years as a mattress designer and as a Doctor of Chiropractic who has worked with so many customers that have similar issues as yourself, I can tell you that there is no one perfect mattress for everyone, but it seems like in your case, you need to get that combination of a more luxuriously plush surface, with the a support system that will help you keep a proper alignment. In your case, that will not likely be achieved without proper zoning to ensure that your back aligns properly as you enjoy the benefits of a more plush surface. The other issue is that without a proper pillow, your overall alignment will still suffer and what most people do not realize is that the pillow and mattress combination is a bit of a moving target. As you go towards a softer mattress, you need to decrease the height of your pillow or your neck will be pulled out of alignment. The opposite is true with regards to a firmer mattress that doesn’t allow your shoulders to sink in as much, since it will require you to use a pillow that has more overall thickness to support the distance that is now great with regards to the spacing of the head and neck with relation to the mattress surface, especially with side sleeping, whereby you want your nose to remain in alignment with your sternum (middle of the chest).

For the pillows, you might want to take a look at the Tempflow GlacierSupreme adjustable bamboo shredded memory foam pillow, since it is very self-adapting, but also can be adjusted to suit the thickness that matches the mattress you choose. For the mattress, you definitely match-up well with our Back Science Series 3 mattress and with the year long sleep trial and free customizations, I am confident that we could match your needs correctly and help you finally get that perfect combination of support and comfort, but I am also happy to offer a free consult via phone chat to give go over your situation in more detail if you want me to talk about other brands that might also be a good fit, since we carry practically every brand you can think of in our flagship showroom Ultrabed mattress store in Souther California. You can reach back out to me on this forum or through the website via telephone or email. If you do wind up making a purchase of a Back Science, be sure to use the extra 10% member discount with the code TMU10 for Mattress Underground member.
