I can tell you from personal experience regarding my horsehair pillow, and my 100% 3" organic wool topper; the natural fibers work along with the sub surface it is placed on. Although our wool topper does add a little contouring and pressure relief and it makes the overall feel of the mattress recognizably different, it does not change the actual firmness level too much. As the wool compresses, it seems to take on the firmness level of the mattress.
Since I sleep with two pillows, I rotate my base pillow between a tempurpedic and 100% wool, but the upper pillow that my head rests on is horse hair. Horsehair does not retain heat and remains cool or heat neutral all the time. Horsehair itself is springy like microcoils, but compresses like wool when when resting my head on it, but springs back when the weight is lifted. It doesnt spring like latex or memory foam, the springy recovery is more uniform.
The Hastens topper is made with all natural fibers and will take on the firmness level of the mattress when compressed. When you first lie on top of it, initially it will give you the sense of a soft plush like feel, then the fibers compress and contour to your body to allow the mattress to do its job of support and comfort.

I’m thinking about i’m saving my budget for my $6,000 mattress, is that topper same thing as Hastens Vividus???
I thought you liked the very soft and plush mattress you purchased last year!

I know i’m trying like ultra plush but sometimes it takes 20 minutes or more minutes to fall asleep on my ultra plush mattress even though i don’t feel pain and i don’t feel hot, maybe i can fall asleep faster on medium firm or plush (not ultra plush). Last week, I fell asleep faster at hotel than my ultra plush mattress
It is a monumental task to try and manipulate a very ultra plush mattress and use a topper to convert it to make it more firm. Unless you have a zippered comfort layer to modify what is on the inside.

Is Hastens topper softer than cheap ($50 to $200.00 mattress topper)?

Cheaper toppers might have less precise construction and may not offer the same even support or comfort.
It is hard to quantify a topper as it relates to it softness and price. As another post described earlier, some manufacturers create mattresses systems around their toppers. So while a topper can be a solution to a firm mattress situation, in many cases a topper is an integral part of a complete mattress system working in harmony with the entire construction and engineering of the bed.
