Help finding new mattress that won't cause back pain

Hi - I’m returning a new mattress that I’ve slept on for over 90 days because it’s been causing mid-back pain. I’m a back sleeper and it’s the Charles P Rogers Lifetime 10 mattress (Estate Lifetime Mattress | Charles P. Rogers® Est. 1855). I consistently wake up with mid-back pain, first it started with pain in the morning and now I’m waking up in the night with it. I never had this issue with my old mattress. My sense is that the mattress, or at least the comfort layer (a combination of Talalay latex and microcoils) is too firm (even though it’s their “plushest” option). This was my first “hybrid” mattress and not sure where to go from here in terms of looking for a new mattress that won’t cause the same issue. Budget is 2500-3500 for a king. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi ynt.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

So sorry to hear about the back pain, though. You might find this post by Phoenix useful in terms of (some) reasons you may experience pain on a mattress.

As a back sleeper, this may be useful information for you:

The “gap” that needs to be filled in with the comfort layer for pressure relief is generally the small of the back (the lumbar area) and because the “gaps” in your profile are not quite as deep as in side sleeping, a slightly thinner top layer will generally work a little better. In back sleeping in other words a slightly shallower cradle is needed. A good starting point for a back sleeper is 2" of softer material on top of your mattress and then increasing or decreasing from there depending on other factors like weight, preferences, or other sleeping positions.

I think your assessment that the mattress is too firm is likely correct. You may not be sinking into the layers properly.

Have you already returned it? Does the place you purchased from have an exchange policy?
