As some folks may have followed along, I got a ViSpring medium Coronet with an Opulence topper this year. My partner hasn’t been sleeping so well on it (5’6" 105 lbs, stomach/side sleeper) and is missing some of the features of her former Leesa Hybrid mattress, namely that she was lying more on top of the mattress (versus sinking in significantly) and thus feeling quite flat. Although she likes how the ViSpring initially feels (“snug, cozy”), something about her body position while sleeping for eight hours is giving her neck and back pain – especially when on her stomach.
We thought it was maybe something to do with her pillow since it was resulting in neck pain but we went to the ViSpring store in New York and they were super helpful in letting us try a few different options and she ended up feeling more comfortable on one of their Firm models regardless of the pillow. This is really counter-intuitive since she is so light and the common wisdom is only someone who is heavier would need a firm. This post (#4), however, describes that some very light people and very heavy people can experience similar issues.
So now the question is if there is anything we can do to try to get a similar flat and firm feeling with our current setup. One thought was to do dominant layering with a Firm Dunlop topper either above, below or instead of our existing topper.
In our search last year, neither of us really liked the feel of a full latex mattress — or firm beds in general — but it seems that may be something that will lead to a better night sleep. Perhaps putting a latex layer underneath the topper would help preserve some of the initial feel that we like and also preserve our existing temperature regulation which is really good.
If anyone has any thoughts that would be much appreciated – either about places in New York or Los Angeles to try firmer latex toppers or about alternative ideas as to what might be causing the back and neck pain. I don’t know as much about which latex brands are available and the details of the particular ILDs so I’m doing some more research there.

Hey OB,
Even though your spouse has a lighter profile, a firmer mattress surface can still be beneficial. It will ensure her body remains “on top of the surface,” allowing pillow height and firmness to impact her comfort.
It’s a likely fact that the natural fill under the mattress cover panel will experience some compression and slight body depression. The firmer mattress she tried at the store likely kept her more on top of the mattress system, which makes sense.
From my own experience with pillows as you are familiar from our previous conversation, I can say that small adjustments can make a big difference. I’ve experimented with overfilling a pillow by just 1/2", which caused neck and shoulder pain. Reducing the loft, especially with firm, compressing horsehair, made me comfortable. Similarly, overfilling my CozyPure Ba-Noodle pillow, which I sometimes sleep on, causes a similar result. I generally will keep both on the bed for quick testing.
For some, even a half-inch adjustment can make a significant difference.
I found this crazy product while browsing Amazon’s lightning specials on Prime Day.
It might seem ridiculous that a $35 device could be helpful compared to a $10k mattress system, but if you try it and it works under the topper, it could be a viable solution. Whether you continue to use it or have VISpring modify the topper to replicate this comfort on her side of the topper, might be the answer.
Sometimes, achieving the perfect comfort level with a mattress requires unconventional approaches. Always think outside the box.
While I know nothing about this Amazon foam product, if it comes close to doing what it says, it may alert you to how to solve the issue internally in the mattress.
All the best,
Maverick

Try the Tempurpedic Serenity topper from Costco. Good return policy.

Hello owlburrito,
Glad to hear you had a great experience at our NYC location.
They do have a couple of toppers there that would have a firmer feel - the Obasan and the Healthy Choice toppers fit what you are looking for. HC has both wool and latex toppers and Obasan is a combination of the two. The staff there may know of other options if you give them a call. They are open 7 days a week if you want to try options.
Also, is it possible to switch the Coronet to a firmer tension? Or are you past the time to do that?
