I have been a serial mattress shopper for many years. I am writing this post in the hopes that this community can put me on the right track.
I am a 72 yo woman weighing 135lbs and sleep primarily on my side. I have mild scoliosis and compressed discs in my lower back which cause me discomfort when I sit. My right side hurts more than my left, so I rarely move from my left side during the night. I tried a Saatva Zen Haven bed but found both sides to be too firm causing shoulder and hip pain. Then I got a Plushbeds Eco Bliss bed and their 3" medium Talalay topper thinking that would help with the shoulder and hip pain. Now I am noticing that my lower back hurts when I get out of bed. I tried the topper alone on a Beauty Rest innerspring mattress we have in the guest room thinking I needed that support and could barely get out of the bed and stand up.
The information on the site is really informative and leads me to the following questions:
Should I consider a hybrid with pocket coils and talalay latex, or should I go with all talalay latex and if so what ILD should I go for. The Saatva had a medium firm side and a medium side and I didn’t find any of those soft enough to sleep comfortably on my side.
I would appreciate any advice you can give. Thank you
I am close to your age and weight with similar pain issues. I also tried Plushbeds. My solution was DIY Dunlop latex for the support - 3" firm, 3" medium, 2" soft (3" would be better but I already had the 2"). I’m still going to add 2" medium Talalay as a separate topper, just for a little more pressure relief on “bony prominences”. Talk to one of the latex experts - they can give you further guidance. Roger at LMF has been extremely helpful and I know SleepEZ is also on the “Talk to the Experts” list. Good luck, and let us know how things turn out for you.
Thanks so much for your input. It’s exciting to know you can custom build a bed for yourself. I will reach out to the experts you listed and let you know the resolution.
