Help with a DIY build that caters to chronic back pain (Pocketed Coils and Energex)

Hi everyone, I’ve been reading a ton since I found this website and I’m hoping I can get some advice on a DIY build I’ve come up with.

I’m 150lbs and I have chronic pain mostly coming from a spinal fusion in my lower back. Most nights I sleep maybe 30% on my back and 70% on my side. Although when my chronic is worse, I tend to sleep the whole night on my back - so I may want to target back sleeping more because of this.

I have been reading that medium-firm generally helps the most with back pain, and generally I think I like a slightly more firm feel. So I’ve been going for that.

I also have a slight latex allergy. I’m reading most latex mattresses are fine but I think I want to avoid it for peace of mind. I’m reading that Energex is a good alternative.

So far this is what I’ve came up with (from bottom to top)

1" 50 ILD Foam (base)
8" - 14.5g Pocketed TPS Coils (support)
1" 24 ILD HR Foam (transition)
2" 20 ILD Energex (comfort)

Then depending on how it feels, possibly adding a 1" memory foam on top.

How does this sound overall? Will this end in a medium-firm feel?

One of my concerns is the transition layer, I have read that with pocketed coils getting the firmness of this layer right can be a lot more important since it limits mobility of the coils.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Sarina!

Welcome to our Mattress Forum, and apologies for the delayed reply.

Were you able to ultimately configure your mattress? Would love to know your progress/where you are in this process.
