Help with Dunlop latex mattress

We received our full Dunlop latex mattress from Nature’s Embrace aprox week ago. Unfortunately, we have had bad experience.
The first night, I awoke after about hour of sleep with significant muscle pains because the mattress felt too firm, with lots of push backs, which is weird to me because top 2 layers were soft. Our mattress has five 2 inch layers: firm-firm-medium-medium/soft-soft. 2nd layer from top is split to two different firmness. I slept on 2nd layer from top, soft.
The second night, I awoke with sore muscles again but also with strong pain in my lower back and hips. I’m currently dealing with sciatica issues for last year or so. My wife experienced less discomfort then me, but she was unable to sleep on her side, her preferred sleeping position, due to insufficient shoulder pressure relief and she’s wake up with numb hand.

After two really bad nights, we purchased a 3 inch memory foam topper to try to improve our sleep. While this helped little bit, the memory foam’s sinking feeling negated the benefits of the latex mattress and generally, I would like to avoid memory foam if is possible. Additionally, this mattress lacked adequate side support which can be annoying during the night in queen size mattress. I understand that most people need some time to adapt to a new mattress, especially a latex one, but if we could not sleep at all, how can we adapt? I have replaced and sleep on many mattresses through my life but never experience anything similar, that I can’t sleep at all. Unfortunately, if I’m going to return this mattres, will cost me more then 1/4 of the price for restocking fee and shipping.

Because of all this, I’m thinking about to exchange the latex mattress for hybrid model with coils and two latex layers to improve side support at least. Not sure if firmness will be different also, with Dunlop latex. We can do one exchange for free but I can ask if we can exchange mattress completely. We previously tried a hybrid latex mattress locally (but with Talalay latex) and found it very comfortable, but ultimately decided against purchasing it due to concerns about the seller’s honesty regarding the mattress components.

Can someone more experienced give me some good advice what to do, how to improve sleeping experience. We will like to stick to latex if is possible and we like concept where we can replace components after few years if something changes. I would say that memory foam almost is not the option due the heat and sinkage feel.

Edit: forgot to mention, we are couple in mid 40’s, I’m 174cm (5,8”) and 86kg (190lbs); my wife is 165cm (5,4”) and 59kg (130lbs)

I’m somewhat surprised that the full latex did not work out for you but dunlop latex does have a bit of a different feel than Talalay does. At this point I think you should take a look our most popular hybrid which comes with the option to upgrade the coil to our very popular 8" Bolsa pocket coil. This coil along with 3" of Medium Talalay should hit the sweet spot that you are looking for. You can always add a soft layer on top but based on your info I think the 3" is all that is needed. Take a look - Eco Sleep Hybrid Latex / Coil Mattress, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products, Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for your reply. Only problem is I’m in Canada.

We can only ship to a border town and you would have to go get it, sorry.

Hi Malua,

I’m sorry to hear about your comfort issues. A coil / Dunlop latex mattress will have less pushback as a solid Dunlop latex mattress. We have a Coil / Latex Hybrid mattress that ships from Canada in case you are interested. Currently it’s made of 2 x 2" of Dunlop latex over 7" of Legget and Platt innersprings and covered with a top-zip wool quilted organic cotton cover for easy access to the top layers in case you need to rotate or exchange them.

We now also carry Talalay latex that is also shipped from Canada and can be used as a top layer in any of our mattresses for those that prefer a plusher top than Dunlop latex. Maybe you can ask N.E. if you can exchange the top Dunlop for Talalay?

I hope this helps you to find a solution to your comfort needs,

All the best

Mario~

Thank you, Mario.

I spoke with NE, and they have kindly offered to send me a coil system to experiment with my current latex layers to find the optimal combination. In the meantime, they sent me an additional soft layer, which has significantly improved the mattress. The side support is slightly better, but the most noticeable improvement is the elimination of the pushback feeling. For the past two days, I’ve been sleeping on a firm-firm-medium-soft-soft-soft configuration, and I’ve finally been able to sleep more comfortably. I’m unsure if this configuration is too soft for my weight. Unfortunately, even with this combination, I still lack proper pressure relief in my shoulder area, and I wake up each morning with shoulder and hip pain. I tried lying on the medium side of our split layers, but it still felt slightly too firm perhaps I need more time to adjust.

You mentioned Talalay latex, but I couldn’t find it on their website, and they didn’t mention it as an option. To be frank, I would strongly prefer a top layer of soft Talalay latex, as I believe it would significantly improve pressure relief. Are you certain they carry Talalay latex? I understand you have some sort of partnership with them.

I will test a few more combinations over the next few days before proceeding with further exchanges. Will see if I will ask for coil system or Talalay.

Good morning Malua,

It’s wonderful to hear that the coils are proving beneficial and that the latex pushback is less noticeable. The coil/latex hybrid mattress is an excellent choice for individuals who prefer a mattress with a more responsive core.

Talalay latex, because of its method of production, tends to be softer, more buoyant, and offers a more cushioned feel. The freezing process allows for a more uniform distribution of air bubbles, resulting in a lighter and more responsive latex. More on comparing Dunlop latex to Talalay latex in this post

Given these considerations, adding a Talalay latex top layer is clearly the best option for individuals seeking superior pressure relief. I am certain that N.E. can obtain this for you. Please contact Tyson; he will be delighted to make the necessary arrangements on your behalf.

Please report back to us with the outcome,

All the best

Mario~
