We are contemplating whether or not we should buy a split bed so that we can customize it later on. We think soft/medium/firm 3 inch layers will work for the both of us. (me 5’9 180 lbs spouse is 5’2 120 lbs).
Questions
-
Considering buying a split so that if later on we decide to change the order perhaps medium top soft middle will there be any discomfort area in the middle of the bed where there is a split?
-
Will one later sink lower than the other in a split bed with different firmness levels on each side?
-
We are sure we like talalay. But if we order talalay for the top two layers and the bottom layer is dunlop will we notice a difference?
-
we like a zenhaven plush medium what later combo will help achieve this? will soft layer bre too soft
Hi cdnpatriot and thanks for reaching out! When you say “split bed” do you mean split layers inside of one cover, or two physically separate mattresses like for use on adjustable bases? If you are getting split layers inside of one mattress cover, you wouldn’t have any problems with those split layers. About 95% of our mattresses go out with all split layers from top to bottom, and we get zero complaints on being able to feel the split and we get zero complaints about the layers shifting or anything like that. If all of your layers are split, you will always be able to adjust your side without affecting your partner’s side and vice versa, and you’ll have that option for the entire 20 year lifespan of the mattress. Additionally, the mattress will be easier to assemble, easier to move if needed, easier to do any layers exchanges if needed, and easier to return if needed. There really are no downsides to having all split layers.
Latex rarely takes a body impression so this really is not something you should expect to encounter. We ship 20-30 mattresses per day and we’ve been in business for 42 years, and we still only get a dozen or so warranty checks / requests per year, so it really is quite rare. Nonetheless, our mattresses have a 20 year warranty that covers a 1.5" body impression, so if you encounter any warranty-related issues please contact us and we’ll get them taken care of for you. Aside from that, there aren’t any extra warranty-related risks associated with having different firmnesses on each side of the mattress.
Having two top layers of Talalay and a bottom layer of Dunlop will make a difference, although it won’t be a major difference. It would make a bigger difference if something changes in the future. For example, if 5 years go by and you get in a car accident or develop back pain for any different reason, you would unzip the cover and move the Dunlop layer to the middle. This will retain all the contour and pressure relief you’re getting from the top Talalay layer but will offer much more support for your lower back because the Dunlop layer is closer to the surface. If you have a firm Talalay layer on the bottom layer and move it to the middle, it will still make a more supportive mattress, but not as much as a Dunlop layer. So it could make a much bigger difference in the long run, but will only make a moderate difference in the short term, but it’s honestly up to you. If needed more support at some point in the future isn’t something you’re worried about and you know you like all-Talalay mattresses then you would do just fine on all Talalay.
The only way to replicate the feel of the Zenhaven plush mattress would be to get the ILD ratings for each layer and the thickness of each layer, then make sure to get the same cover-type as well (the 4-way stretch cover). A soft (19-22 ILD) top layer is what we recommend for anyone under 185 pounds that sleeps on their side or back. If you are both side and back sleepers than that should be just fine. Of course if you sleep on that and find that it’s too soft (since you’re right at the border where we’d recommend either soft or medium for the top layer) then you would just unzip the cover and move the firm layer to the middle of the mattress. Of course if all your layers are split, you’ll be able to make this change without affecting your partner’s side of the mattress.
