Hi all,
I am looking to buy my grandma a new mattress for her upcoming birthday. We have a casper (costco) model at home and honestly LOVE it. I have been considering buying her some type of casper however I think that were starting to notice the sag as most others do over time. She has had 3-4 mattresses over the last few years that eventually sagged (a variety of basic coil beds) or that she immediately hated due to them being “too soft”. She just purchased a serta classic plush 11in queen mattress from QVC of all places and already after 2 months she HATES it. She asked me to help her flip it around to the backside so that it would be more firm and claimed that its more comfortable on the other side where there is literally no mattress material just basically a bottom base A few days later she stated she needs to start looking for a new one again. She is a side/ back sleeper, prefers cooler temps, apparently prefers true FIRM with a little cushion and shes on a pretty tight budget being newly retired. I’m a mom of 5 and working with a tight budget as well but can’t stand to see her in so much pain. Please help me find a great mattress for her birthday within my $600-$700 budget
I was thinking that a hybrid ( extra firm foam & inner coils ) may be a good thing to look into however I have no idea if that exists as most mattresses I’ve seen with foam looks too soft and plush for her liking. I am open to a mattress in a box type if its possible that it will not easily sag.
Thanks so much !
Hey there Amercado25,
I am not sure where you are located, but if you are in the MN area @BeloitMattress in Wisconsin might be a good resource for what you are looking for, or if you want a mattress shipped right to your door in a box made with quality materials that rival and exceed any mattress you might find in a Sams or Costco, then take a look at @DLX and @EngineeredSleep.
All of these folks offer mattresses that incorporate quality spring support, and various levels of firmness, including firmer level mattresses that are both comfortable and good for maintaining proper posture and alignment, pressure relief issues and offering longevity.
Additionally, all of these folks have expert representatives who can guide you properly and professionally to meet your grandmother’s preferences, without the guesswork you would need to employee with places like costco, sams and QVC. It is not that these places dont often come across some nice quality value mattresses, you really want to cut to the chase and speak with a professional that will get you right to where you need, so grandma will be happy and comfortable.
Maverick
Thanks for the mention, @Maverick!
@Amercado25, sorry to hear about the issues with your grandma’s mattresses—very nice birthday present idea, though.
Given the issues with the mattresses wearing out so quickly, we highly recommend checking the bed frame, box spring, and overall support system. This is often overlooked but is a key contributor to mattress longevity. If possible, try placing the mattress directly on the floor temporarily to see if things improve.
Feel free to post photos of the bed frame or box spring, including pictures directly below the mattress and underneath the bed frame showing the supports to the floor. Exterior photos of the bed frame aren’t necessary, as most exterior framing is adequate—the real issue is usually with the mattress supports. Even lower-quality mattresses shouldn’t fail so quickly. If the past three to four mattresses have failed within 6–12 months, the problem may not be the mattress itself. No guarantees, but I’d check the support system before purchasing another mattress and ending up in the same situation in 6–12 months.
We have the Essential, a firm, two-sided mattress with minimal padding. It wouldn’t be considered extra firm, but it has slightly more padding than the bottom of the Serta while offering a comparable feel. If you’re looking for extra firm, we might be able to make it.
