How long does a topper last? Do I need a new mattress?

Hello!
I read some of the tutorials and did some research but still wondering if I need a new mattress.
I have a memory foam mattress from 6 years ago (sorry don’t have any details on the mattress) that I found to be too firm and lacked comfort (sinking in), so I bought a 3" Talalay latex medium mattress topper 2 years ago. The topper provided the comfort I needed and my body pain went away. Recently, I started feeling hip pain again (BMI 20.5), with no improvement after rotating/flipping the mattress and topper.
How can I tell if my hip pain is due to wearing out of my topper or my mattress or both? I’m thinking I will need a new mattress if it’s a support layer problem (based on the tutorials), but how can I tell what is the root cause? Is it expected that the topper is only good for 2 years?
Thank you!

Hello Shopaholic029

Thank you kindly for your inquiry. I am sorry to hear that you are having comfort issues with your mattress.
Latex toppers are only as good as the mattress it sits on. In your case it sounds as though your mattress is no longer a viable source of support for your topper. If your mattress was already showing signs of breaking down prior to your purchasing the topper, then it will only get worse over time. Your topper was only ever going to be a temporary fix. After only two years, your topper is most likely still in good shape, and should be for years to come. You can however check your topper to see if it has begun to soften by placing it on a flat surface and simply checking for soft spots by feeling it with your hand. Once you have placed it on a flat surface (such as a hardwood floor), press your hand in and out of the latex as you slowly move it across the layer from edge to edge. If your layer has broken down at any spot, you should be able to feel a noticeable difference in density with this feel test. If you do not feel any difference, then your topper is in good shape, and you therefore may simply need a new mattress.

I hope this helps! Please keep us posted as to how it goes. Feel free to come back should you have any further questions. Good luck, and have a wonderful day!
