A local store is selling their floor model S-Cape and Prodigy adjustable beds. I called them and they said they had been on the floor for about 2 years. Warranty is past 1-year mark, so I am wondering if it would be wise to buy a used model. Would motor, controls etc. last 10-15 years?
Hi amypdx,
There is no way to know this with electronic equipment. Just like with home appliances some may last for 20 years without any issues and another one of the same make and model and others may break down in a year or less.
You can see the L&P warranty here but most of their adjustable beds will last a long time and well past their 1 year full warranty or the additional 2 year limited warranty for the electronic or electrical parts and motors but of course there is no way to know what will happen with any specific purchase. Beyond this the additional 17 year limited warranty is only for the steel or mechanical parts and excludes any electrical, electronic, or motor components. You would be losing all of the full 1 year warranty and most of the limited warranty for the electronic or electrical parts and keeping most of the limited warranty for the mechanical or steel parts. The worst case is that you would need to pay for any electrical parts that failed but you would need to do that after 3 years anyway,
It’s really up to you to decide how you feel about the discount you would be receiving vs losing some of the warranty coverage … particularly on the electronics … and it would depend on whether the additional risk was worth the discount to you. Each person could have a different answer depending on their risk tolerance.
I certainly wouldn’t have the same issues with buying a used adjustable bed as I would buying a used mattress (which I personally wouldn’t do).
