Just bought my first house...now I need to buy a mattress. Casper?

hi all. wife and i just bought a house so our budget for a new mattress isn’t huge. we’re hoping to spend <$1000 if possible.

we’ve had a Dreamfoam Latex Mattress for the past 6 years and liked it enough. i also have a Costco-purchased Casper at my parents house that we like.

at any rate, i’m 5’11 200lbs, wife is 5’'9 145lbs. wife is a side/stomach sleeper and i’m a back sleeper. we both sleep hot and prefer something that doesn’t retain tons of heat.

right now we’ve narrowed it down to the Brooklyn Bedding/Dreamfoam Elements in Firm or the Casper Select at Costco. any opinions or insights on these two options? any others i should consider?

bump

Hey iwannasleepgood,

Thanks too for including both of yours personal stats and sleep preferences as those are helpful for better understanding of what type mattress may be better suited for your needs as well as a mattress’s durability potential. With regards to your both “sleeping hot”, the combination of materials and construction of any mattress you consider will determine its heat retention/ air circulating/ cooling abilities. Combinations of latex, natural materials and proper foundation use, as well as the type linens used on the mattress all play a role as well.

Which Dreamfoam Elements/ Firm are you looking at, the 10" or 12" with customizable comfort layer, what size mattress and is this the same Dreamfoam Latex model you have currently? Which Casper model is the one you like at your parents’ house? You may also find a review of Phoenix’s article"Five Steps to Your Perfect Mattress"helpful during the final stages of your comparison shopping for making final decisions. Looking forward to hearing more about your research as it progresses, iwannasleepgood.

Thanks Sensei!

in terms of the specific models i was looking at; the DreamFoam Elements Latex Firm 12" Zipper Cover in King. the Casper i have at my parents was a Queen size purchased about a year ago in a Costco Warehouse. i was looking at the Costco-sold Casper Select in King.which appears to be 12" foam. some reviews say it’s quite soft but that hasn’t been my experience when i’m home visiting the folks. that said, i’ve only slept on it maybe 5 times thus far.

in regards to the Dreamfoam i used to have; i don’t recall. it was purchased 7 years ago and, at the time, i dont believe it was owned by Brooklyn Bedding. in fact, i think i spoke with someone on the phone who directed me on which model to get in terms of firmness. it landed somewhere between a 5-10 with 10 being the most firm. at least…i think it was Dreamfoam. there are times where i think i might be misremembering and it was actually a Sleep Innovations…

Bump. Confirming our last mattress was dreamfoam. Not bad but didn’t develop a sag after 4-5 years.

What’s my best bet <$1,000 for king sized moderately firm and cool sleeping?

Thanks!

Hey iwannasleepgood,

Thanks for your replies to my questions  .

The DreamFoam Elements Latex 12" Zippered Cover mattress features an exchangeable 3" Talalay latex comfort layer over an 8" HD foam support core. The Casper Select is a 4 layer/ 12" memory foam mattress, with the 3rd layer being a zoned transitional foam, in one firmness: medium. Either of these constructions “could” be a good choice for you both, as long as you have an understanding of how differently a Talalay latex comfort layer reacts to body weight and distribution vs. memory foam’s response. Generally speaking, Talalay latex has a more “uplifting”, sleeping “on” a mattress feel, while memory foam gives a “sinking into”/ more cradling mattress feel. Memory foam mattresses can potentially sleep warmer as well, a concern for those who prefer sleeping in cooler environment.

I cannot recommend a specific mattress for you, iwannasleepgood; however, I can guide you through the decision making process and continue to offer thought starters to point you in a better direction when needed. You have done a good job researching several mattress candidates. Both are mattresses that you have familiarity with, and both seem similar in your preferred constructions and firmness, and neither indicate any particular “weak links” in construction as described. Both mattresses also seem well within your budget and are supported by appropriate exchange/ return policies. Will you have access to either mattress for a site visit and product testing? Looking forward to hearing how you decide and good luck with next steps  .

thank you! i think i just added one other mattress to the comparison; the Nest Love & Sleep. can’t beat the price and the reviews seem solid. only issue i’m worried about is my size…i’m 5’11 205 lbs.

thanks again!
