Latex mattress covers

I am new to this site and very glad I found it, it’s a wealth of great information. My apologies if I did not post in the correct area.

I am in the process of looking for a new mattress and decided to go with an organic latex mattress both for comfort and durability.

My concern and question is with the various mattress covers. Most sites list a thick natural wool that is woven into the top layer of the mattress cover in order to meet fire barrier requirements. There are also many different types of material cotton, bamboo, Tencel. I have read several reviews where people who slept on a latex mattress pre fire barrier days complained that their new latex mattress with the woven wool it did not have the same feel the same as their old mattress that did not have the wool.

My concern is that the woven wool will lessen the feel of the latex due to the fact that it may not give or stretch enough. There are a few companies that will sell mattress that does not have the thick wool woven into the cover providing you provide a doctors script. Does anyone have any experience or opinions regarding how the woven wool effects the feel of the latex and what works best ie Cotton, Bamboo etc? I remember my grandfather having an all latex mattress years ago which did not have a woven wool layer (in the days when there were no fire barrier requirements) and remembering how soft and supportive it felt.
Should I bother to purchase a mattress that requires a doctors script and eliminate the woven wool layer does it really affect the feel?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello WML52

Thank you kindly for your inquiry. There are basically two types of quilted wool covers that are offered by companies that sell latex mattresses; Woven and Knitted. We offer the knitted wool cover. If a wool cover is the knitted version, it is a semi stretch cover. This is important in that it allows your body to contour into the latex without changing the overall contour of the surface of your mattress. The woven version does not stretch, and therefore creates a firmer sleep surface because your body is unable to contour into the mattress surface like you can with a knitted cover.

We do have customers that prefer the non-quilted/non-padded 4-way stretch cover. This cover allows you to sleep right on the foam below without any padding quilted into the cover. A 4-way stretch cover allows for even more contour than a knitted quilted cover does. SleepEZ offers a cotton 4-way stretch cover you can find here: https://www.sleepez.com/products/zippered-latex-mattress-cover. Some companies offer the 4-way stretch cover made of bamboo as well. Usually both the cotton and bamboo versions have a lining of Rayon in them that serves as a natural fire barrier.

Should you have more questions, feel free to call our office as well. Thanks again for the inquiry, and keep them coming!
