I’ve been reading all this wonderful information on purchasing a new mattress. I’ve decided on a all latex mattress after testing out a lot of mattresses. I found one that I really liked but it is out of my price range and was hoping for some advice on how to duplicate it with a DIY mattress. I understand that it may not feel exactly the same due the differences in latex and coverings, but would hope to get close. The mattress was Serenity. The top layer is 3 inches soft Talalay, next is 3 inches medium Dunlop, and bottom layer 3 inches firm Dunlop. It has a quilted cotton and wool cover. Any advice on where I may be able to get this would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
There are plenty of places where you could do the DIY latex mattress to hopefully get close.
A key that you’re gonna want though, is to get the actual specs of the foam layers you checked out. Different places may have different definitions of “soft”, “medium”, or “firm”. Figure out what the ILDs are for the layers on the bed you tried.
Thank you BChaps, I’ll do that! Very helpful info. Do you have a recommendation on which companies to use?
I just ordered mine a couple weeks ago (hasn’t come in yet), so I can’t speak to quality/comfort…and I haven’t owned a Latex mattress before (this is my first one!)
When looking at places, I narrowed it down to 3 main places…though maybe there’s more I should have looked at:
[ul]
[li]Sleep EZ[ul]
[li]For the most part, you select the mattress size, and then select what you want for the layers[/li]
[li]Most well-known of the 3 listed, and have been around forever[/li]
[li]Potentially the most expensive of the 3 listed - depending on what you get[/li]
[li]Has a trial/return period[/li]
[li]Was helpful on the phone, but is also a larger company with multiple customer service reps[/ul][/li]
[li]Latex Mattress Factory[ul]
[li]More middle-ground on price…or the highest if you customize a lot[/li]
[li]You buy all of the components separately (not as a package)[/li]
[li]Seems like return/warranty period are pretty bad (because it’s not a package deal[/li]
[li]Was helpful on TMU, but couldn’t get them on the phone (only tried once though)[/li][/ul][/li]
[li]Arizona Premium Mattress[ul]
[li]Just like LMF, this is a DIY thing (get components separately). They do offer full mattresses though[/li]
[li]Price was middle-ground for highly-customized, but lowest for basic stuff[/li]
[li]Warranty was very limited just like LMF[/li]
[li]No returns…which was a big draw-back to me[/li]
[li]Ken is very helpful (on here or the phone), as was pleasant to work with[/li]
[li]If you buy a full-mattress worth of stuff, it is treated as a “full mattress”, and you get the 20-year warranty, rather than the 5-year that the DIY products would have on their own.[/li]
[li]Shipping is really slow[/li][/ul][/li][/ul]
I ended up going with APM, but I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them.
I just APM because:
- Their price came out to much lower than an equivalent one at the other places
- Getting the full 20-year warranty when buying all of the DIY components was a huge plus
- I’m in no rush, so the slow shipping didn’t bother me
- No returns sucks…but due to the cost-savings, I’m willing to take the risk
- Also on returns, if I don’t like something, it won’t break the bank to just get a new layer to try
Again, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these 3…or even some other options out there. Those are just the 3 that I narrowed it down to.
Good luck!
Thanks for all this great information. I’ll check into these companies. Looking forward to seeing how your mattress turns out for you all!
I appreciate your help!
