I’m 185 pounds. Most of my weight is in my mid section. I’m a combination sleeper… back, side, stomachs. I do have some back and hip pain. I suffer from night sweats every night. I’m not sure if a cooling mattress could alleviate it but I don’t want one that will cause extra heat. I also plan on using it on an adjustable base and preferably one that’s not more than 12” thick. I would be open to both all latex and latex hybrid. I’ve not tested a latex mattress, but I think I’d want something with a bit of an edge support. Thank you!
Hi Aka,
Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.
When it comes to a Talalay mattress. Just about every one of our Trusted Member Experts offer either all Talalay, combination of Dunlop and Talalay, or Hybrid Talalay.
@CST and @FloBeds are two TMs that exclusively focus on all Talalay bedding systems.
@Arizona_Premium, @Sleep_EZ, @TheCleanBedroom @EuropeanSleep and @CozyPure are some that offer all latex options in either Talalay, Dunlop or a combination of either. Of course the others here at TMU offer hybrid options as well.
So you have a plethora of options. Options with cotton and wool covers are helpful in wicking moisture away from the body, thus keeping your body from heating up.
Latex can be a very comfortable option. I recently tried several latex mattress options, all latex, hybrids, and hybrids with conforming microcoil layers that further foster less heat build from getting trapped in the foam. Plus, latex is a buoyant material, that is long lasting and very resilient.
I am certain a few of our Trusted Member experts will weigh in and offer some excellent suggestions.
Looking forward to their chiming in.
Maverick
Hi Aka, and welcome to the Mattress Underground,
Maverick is correct - we do offer mattresses with Talalay - Savvy Rest mattresses, which offer customization. You may choose Talalay, Dunlop, or a combination of both.
To sleep cooler, natural materials will generally be more breathable, trapping less heat.
Dunlop can also be customized to be softer, if the reason you are looking at Talalay is for more cushioning.
Obasan Mattresses are designed to provide targeted support, which can be ideal if your want extra firmness in one part of the mattress. Its natural latex composition and organic cotton and wool cover also help with temperature regulation.
Healthy Choice Customizable Latex Mattresses offer the flexibility to fine-tune the feel of the mattress and are slightly lower in price than Obasan. Its latex construction also promotes cooler sleep. It also has an organic cotton cover, with wool quilted in for comfort and temperature regulation.
Naturepedic Hybrids, such as the EOS series, are a solid, eco-friendly option with balanced support and good airflow from its coil system. You can also customize the firmness, but not by zone.
I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck in your search! Let us know if we can help.
With hot sleeping, weirdly it’s not about cooling—it’s about humidity control.
People who live in humid places understand that it’s not the temp that gets you it’s the heat-index which is how hot it feels based on how damp the air is. Basically, 90 degrees and dry, with a little breeze is way more comfortable than 80 and humid with no air movement.
Many mattresses marketed as “cooling” use gels, synthetic foams, or phase change fabrics that may feel cool at first but trap heat and moisture over time, making you feel clammy, which in turn makes you feel hot.
A better approach is choosing breathable, moisture-wicking materials that let air and moisture move freely. Talalay latex has excellent airflow (dunlop is good as well, albeit to a slightly lesser degree), while cotton and wool help regulate temperature by keeping you dry, and helping to regulate humidity.
If possible, avoid waterproof encasements, or allergy covers, as they can trap humidity and make overheating worse. (Mattress pads with polyester fill can make you sweaty too.)
Also, your bedding plays a huge role—skip down or polyester comforters and opt for lightweight wool or cotton instead. Stick to 100% cotton or linen sheets, which allow for better airflow and moisture dissipation, helping you stay drier and more comfortable throughout the night.
Regardless of materials, softer mattresses are also always a bit warmer than firmer beds (just because more of your body is in the bed), and “hybrids” tend to have better airflow and moisture reduction than solid foams.
Since mattress feel is subjective, the best way to know what works for you is to try different options in a store, if possible. Edge support is also going to feel different with different products and may not be needed, depending on how the mattress supports you. Latex, in general, has good support, pressure reduction, and durability characteristics, so it’s a great place to start your search. The type of springs (if you go the hybrid route), how the cover is made and quilted, how the mattress is assembled, etc…, all matter too, but sometimes it’s better to just feel the beds! Also, I realize that trying a mattress can be difficult, depending on where you are located.
phew. Please feel free to give us a call if you have any questions (even if you are not close to the store), and we will be happy to talk to you about your concerns.
Talalay latex is our specialty in fact I’m having breakfast next week with the CEO of Talalay Global. One thing I caution against is using any kind of waterproof mattress protector as this will not allow good air flow and lead to night sweats. That being said Talalay has the best air flow of any type of foam and I should know living in Phoenix where summers are brutal. Our most popular model is 10" finished and would consist of 9" of Talalay latex with a breathable Bamboo/wool zippered cover to allow adjustments and rotating the comfort layer for more durability. It’s very important to be able to rotate and flip the comfort layer of any mattress as that is the weak point since it’s taking most of the wear and tear. Take a look at this model and get back to me if you have any questions - #1 Selling Latex Mattress- Adjustable Ultra Plush, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products, or you can checkout our best selling hybrid which also has excellent air flow - Eco Sleep Hybrid Latex / Coil Mattress, Latex Mattresses-Talalay and Dunlop, All Products,
