My wife and I have been using a Sealy Premier Hybrid Copper Plush mattress for about 10 years now and have been mostly happy with it. We’re ready to upgrade to a King-size mattress. After researching the chemicals in modern memory foam mattresses and their tendency to wear out quickly, I started looking into latex mattresses. We’ve decided to build our own mattress using layers of latex for the cost savings and the ability to customize it.
Initially, I considered using Texas pocket coils to reduce costs, but they are fairly close in price to using two 3-inch layers of latex.
My current plan is to purchase three 3-inch layers of latex from Sleep on Latex: two medium layers and one soft layer. Sleep on Latex seems to be the most affordable option, especially when factoring in shipping. If this setup works for us, I can go ahead and purchase a cover. If we find it too firm, I can always buy an additional soft layer.
Now to my questions:
Does my overall plan sound good? My wife and I both weigh under 180 lbs. and prefer a softer mattress. We mostly sleep on our sides but often end up on our backs.
Regarding the frame, we’re planning to visit West Elm and Ikea in Orlando today. We’ll likely choose an Ikea frame because they’re much cheaper. Do you think the slats Ikea sells will work well for a latex mattress? Alternatively, I could skip the slats and DIY my own with a 2-inch spacing if needed.
It does. It sounds like you also have a realistic approach to what you need to do if you need a softer set up. Are the two medium layers going to differ in ILD, or how did you come to that decision? Just because of your preference for the softer bed?
The slats appear to be fine in terms of spacing. You’d want to double check how much weight they can hold, as well. Latex is exceptionally heavy, and then you add two people on that and that’s quite a lot to support.
I believe I was basing that off a Sleep Essentials video recommendation for a softer mattress. If you have a better recommendation, let me know. I’m still undecided on using the Texas Pocket Springs as well.
I went ahead and skipped the slats they sell since the spacing was more like 4”. I’ll use 1x4x8’s cut to length, 2-3” apart.
