Mattress in a box recommendation request

Hello!

I come here to humbly ask you for a recommendation for a “mattress in a box” queen size for my kid’s sleepover destination (his grandparents).

So, dear experts, I need to make a decision and purchase a mattress ASAP (sales!) that:

  1. Come in a box (which means no springs!) - I would have to transport it in a car before installing it, as such, regular mattresses are a no-go.
  2. Be a queen size - my kid is 12 and growing (sometimes we would crash there, too). He is a side sleeper, back sleeper and upside down sleeper.
  3. Be as firm as possible (I know it can be a challenge as non-spring mattresses are soft by their limitation). At home, we are sleeping on a Streans and Foster something rather, that was by far the firmest in the whole store. It might be harder to fall asleep, but we get a great night sleep.
  4. Be reasonably priced - it is going to be a once every 3-4 weeks kind of a mattress. My parents have an older mattress that is showing its age and my kid started complaining.

I trust you will have some recommendation for me as I rely on your wisdom and knowledge!
Thanks!

Hi dandanio,
Welcome to the MattressUnderGround and thanks for your question.

There are a host of mattresses out there that meet you criteria. A majority of our latex manufacturer Trusted Members can product a mattress to your specifications as can a few of our traditional style mattress manufacturers.

I will skip the various pro’s and con’s when selecting a mattress for an adolescence as the mattress will be used by both your son and other family members may be using the mattress intermittently. The selection of a mattress for a growing child is important for posture and alignment, a factor that parents sometime overlook. Most quality medium-firm to firm mattresses for kids that are hypoallergenic, breathable, doesn’t sleep hot and is safe to sleep on.

The one curious thing is your 1st statement in your requirements.

The choice of hybrid vs all foam is still an option.

If you simply do not want a hybrid mattress, that is a perfectly acceptable choice, but it does not disqualify a high quality mattress from being delivered or transported in a box.

You mentioned you wanted the most firm mattress as possible.

This is not much of an issue or challenge either. Manufacturers such as Trusted Members @Latex_Mattress_Fact1 , @Arizona_Premium , @Sleep_EZ, @FloBeds and @CST call all produce an extra firm mattress to your specifications.
If you prefer the more traditional constructed mattress option, in the spirit of the S&F like design, in a quality build, compressed, rolled and shipping in a box (you would never know it was a BinB) @DLX makes their classic hybrid which may surprise you as a more traditionally looking mattress that comes in a box.

This is always the most ambiguous question, as everyone’s definition of reasonably priced can be all over the place.

For reference, and I am not stepping on any of our Trusted Members toes here.
I own a Brooklyn Bedding Plank Luxe, a BinB company that also makes the Plank. Both versions of this mattress are flippable, with one side being extra firm 9.5-10/10 and the flip side being a 8-8.5/10. The Luxe version of the Plank comes with an excellent support pocketed spring system, and the original Plank is an all HD foam system, both come in a box as would any mattress highlighted by our Trusted Members.

When I was narrowing my decision, my initial search in google/duckduckgo was firmest mattress on the market. I had it narrowed down to a Shifman, Sterns & Foster Rockwell Estate Ultra Firm and the Brooklyn Bedding Plank Luxe. The Plank Luxe was even more firm than both named mattresses. One could argue the merits of design that for 1/5 the price, the Plank Luxe having a more simple design, less foams to break down, is the “better” mattress. The is really a subjective comfort choice and as everyone is different, there are those who will debate the term “better” like a debate on the floor of congress. This would not be clear cut experience or outcome.

It is actually easy for someone to say, here is a quality extra firm mattress, done! If that is your preference, it can easily be done. That is not much of a challenge for the Trusted Members I mentioned.

In the final analysis, it will really get down to your budget.

Good luck in your choice, you can not go wrong with any of the choices our expert Trusted Members might offer.

Thank you for the mention, @maverick. As Norm pointed out, some spring mattresses can be compressed in a box and still offer a firm feel and some of our mattresses fall into this category. If you’re seeking a firm option, our Essential mattress is likely the best choice. Despite its affordable price, it’s crafted with quality materials for a firm feel.

It’s worth noting that perceptions of firmness vary so while the Classic may not suit everyone seeking a firm mattress, it might be suitable for some. For future readers, it’s advisable to consult with us to assess whether the Classic meets your firmness preferences, considering factors like height, weight, sleep position, and past mattress experiences.

Keep in mind that for those looking for the absolute firmest mattress, a bed in a box may not be suitable. This is because achieving maximum firmness often requires a high-quality open coil design with minimal padding, which isn’t available in boxed mattresses because open coil units can only be shipped in their full size due to their construction. While I won’t delve into specific specifications here about open coils, we’re happy to provide further details if needed, though it’s a somewhat nuanced topic with a lot of variables.

@dandanio If you provide details such as the year of purchase, model name, firmness rating, and height of your Stearns and Foster mattress, we might be able to offer insight into whether our DLX Essential will feel firmer or softer in comparison to it.
