Mattress recommendation for mixed weight and height couple, in person, Missouri

Hello, I’m hoping one of you can help me. We are ready to shop for a new mattress. The past 14 years we have had a Stearns and Foster Estate pillow top king mattress. It has continued to be comfortable for me but even though he picked it out, he lost his joy with it fairly soon after purchasing. We are looking to go to a split King (two twin xl, I suppose) with an adjustable base. Here are our specs:

He is 57, 6’3”, 400 #, long waisted and has slept mostly in a Lane comfort king recliner for the past 10 years. When he does sleep in bed for a short period it is on his side or back. I cannot remember when he last spent a full night in bed and laying flat for long periods isn’t in the cards for him due to a variety of aches, pains (in particular shoulder and sciatica issues, as well as issues related to his weight) . I would call him a relatively hot sleeper.

I am 56, 5’2” 185#. I have primarily neck and upper back issues (and mostly sleep on my left side, always with a cervical pillow). My pillow is more critical than the mattress itself and I am open to trying new things.

We are looking for in-person shopping only, and live in Missouri surrounded by furniture stores. My husband hates shopping and it’s tricky to get him to go so I would like some good ideas of brands/models to try and steer clear of. I have considered a sleep number bed, and there is a store very near to us, but I’m leery because of what I’ve read about them and with my husband’s weight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiries! Based on the information you’ve provided, I recommend a mattress made with four 3" layers of latex, which corresponds to our 13" model. This level of thickness is ideal for individuals who weigh near or over 300 lbs, as it provides the necessary support and comfort.

For first-time latex mattress shoppers, I typically recommend our Organic models. These models feature a combination of both Talalay and Dunlop latex, with the top layer being 100% Natural Talalay and the bottom three layers made of GOLS-certified Dunlop. Talalay is a softer, more open-celled foam that offers excellent pressure relief and breathability, making it an ideal top comfort layer. Meanwhile, Dunlop is denser, heavier, and firmer, which makes it perfect for the supportive layers underneath.

Recommended Configurations

For Him (400 lbs, primarily side and back sleeper):

  • Firm over Firm over Extra Firm over Extra Firm (F/F/XF/XF)
The firm Talalay top layer will provide necessary contouring and pressure relief for his weight, while the firm and extra firm Dunlop layers below will offer progressive and adequate support.

For You (185 lbs, primarily side sleeper):

  • Soft over Medium over Firm over Extra Firm (S/M/F/XF)
The soft Talalay top layer will give you the same level of contouring and pressure relief at your weight that the firm Talalay provides for him. The medium, firm, and extra firm Dunlop layers below will provide proper support for your body.

Customization Benefits

One of the great features of these layered mattresses is the ability to unzip the cover and rearrange the layers to adjust the comfort and support levels. For instance, if you find the S/M/F/XF configuration a bit too soft, you could move the firm layer directly beneath the soft layer (S/F/M/XF) for a firmer feel on the surface.

Comfort Exchange Policy

Our Organic mattress models come with a 90-day comfort exchange policy. During this period, you can exchange any layer (or two split layers) as many times as needed. Your first exchange will incur a flat $30 fee, and subsequent exchanges will be charged the cost of shipping (typically $25–$65, depending on location).

While we aim to get the configuration right on the first attempt, nearly 90% of customers are satisfied with the recommended setup provided through either our mattress configurator tool or direct assistance. Of those who do need an exchange, 9 out of 10 customers only require a single adjustment.

Should you have any additional questions, feel free to reply to this thread or call our office anytime. Thank you again!

Best regards,
Jeremy
