Mattress Suggestions - High BMI, Pain Issues, Canada

One of us is 5’8" and 300 lbs and likes firm, the other is 6’1" and 200 lbs and likes soft. Located near Vancouver, BC (Fraser Valley).

The wife finally realized it’s new mattress time and has looking at a Douglas mattress. I’ve since stumbled upon this site and realized what a bad idea that probably is. She’s using that as a budget reference, so I’m trying to find something better for the same $950 after tax (or less).

My main concerns is durability. My wife was in an car accident, so spend more than usual time in bed. Add to that a high BMI, and it has a tendency to wear out mattresses. The problem is two fold, one we need a new bed, and two, she feels like it’s her fault for wearing out the bed.

After talking to Mario at MFC a bit, I was leaning to the Presto Classic in a split king. It ticked a lot of boxes, other than price. I then found a post about how they are currently using 3 lbs foam, and dispite Mario saying otherwise, that goes against a lot of advice here (5 lbs minimum). I thought about the Latex Presto, but that pushes the budget to 3x what we were hoping, and I just don’t think it would work.

Suggestions? We are open to everything from coils to latex to whatever. Split king would be the preference to help with the difference in BMI and preferences, but isn’t a deal breaker.

Hi Caswell.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Mario is very knowledgable and MFC is wonderful. While we do tend to recommend 5 lbs for heavier sleep profiles, 3 lbs isn’t going to be and end-all be-all, it just won’t last as long as a 5 lb foam. What’s most important is that you and your partner are 1.) supported adequately and 2.) comfortable! So, if you’ve found a good fit with MFC, I’d say you can move confidently ahead and it will be leaps and bounds ahead of the Douglas for $950.

A King sized mattress at that budget is, frankly, alarming. Generally speaking, a cheaper mattress = cheaper materials = reduced longevity. There’s nothing I could recommend you in good conscious that is near that budget.

For example, this Split King by GhostBed is nearly $4,000 and I believe the Presto split king is currently in the $2900 range. $2900 - $4000 is much more realistic if you’re looking for something reasonably durable.

I’m sorry I don’t have better news there.
