We are looking to buy a new mattress. We want something very comfortable. I weigh 280 lbs and my wife around 165. We both have small lower back issues. Online we have been looking at the tempflow and back science. We only have box stores around here and was wondering if there was something compatible to try to see if we like the feel? We are also open to any suggestions and brand type to look into. We are both side and back sleepers. I change positions a lot. Thanks for any help and advice.
Hey,
I bought a BackScience2. Its great! Honestly, the feel is very unique and the back support is amazing. The BS2 did remind me a little of a Purple but with good back support. The comfort layer on top is halfway between latex and memory foam.
John
Thank you for responding. We are going to lay on a few mattresses this weekend. So would you recommend this over temperpedic or sterns and foster which I can buy here.
Cray,
I bought BackScience2 over Tempurpedic for me because I was having lower back pain. I didnt like any S and F.
I dont know what you would like. The back support and spinal alignment with BackScience was key to me. It also feels cloud like. The name BackScience connotes “stiffness” and “firmness”, but it is so soft yet supportive.
I did try a Tempur Luxe Adapt Firm 2.0 for 20 min on my back. I felt after 8 min that back support was lacking and I wanted back support. It felt a little bit like my worn out Temper at home. Im a heavy 235 pound 5 ft 11 in guy.
All mattresses are subjective, so if you like Tempur or S and F, go buy it. There is no one size fits all mattress.
The surface feel of BS does remind me of Purple. I find the pressure relief of Purple to be amazing, but back support was lacking. I bought a Purple 4 in 2018 and returned it. Back pain started after day 2. Not enough support for lower back. So BS2 is like a Purple mattress with back/spinal support. BS3 is just a bit more plush. I did lay of Purple Restore and Rejuvenate and they felt great, but BS2 was better due to back support. In addition, the comfort layer can be customized.
John
Since you are 280, most likely you will like BS2 over BS3. BS2 is luxury firm. My wife is 110 and she feels that BS2 is soft.
John
I would be happy to chime in here, though John / BillyIdol did a great job explaining his take from a customer’s point of view, and I agree that Purple has a similar feel. However, as he mentioned, it doesn’t have the same low back zoning support, and the waffle squares can feel like they shift underneath you. I think it’s closer to Sleep Number, and specifically, the Sleep Number i10 compares most closely to the Back Science Series 3, while the i8 would compare in feel to the Back Science Series 2. Of course, with Sleep Number, you don’t have the same low back support for your spine. Instead of using our over 1,000 count individually wrapped coils and Lumbar-Flex zoning technology, Sleep Number uses an air system with an adjustable air bladder that functions much like a raft. It allows air to displace away from the heavier mid-section of your body, reducing the lumbar support found with Back Science. Still, when pumped up to around 65, it provides an initial feel that is very comparable to the initial feel of a Back Science mattress (i10 in the case of the Series 3 comparison and i8 in the case of the Series 2 comparison).
I do think that the Series 3 would be the perfect match for you, but if needed, we can definitely alter the firmness as discussed afterward. Tempflow, on the other hand, has a feel very similar to Tempur-Pedic and even has a comparable model list that can guide you through which model to choose. The firmer Tempflow mattresses do well at providing very evenly contouring support and certainly excel at reducing pressure points to a level that even exceeds Back Science, but with the high level of comfort that Back Science provides. If your goal is to get the low back support you need, then Back Science is the ideal choice for both of you, since neither of your weights is an issue with either the Series 2 or 3.
Once you have a chance to test other mattresses, feel free to take give us a call, and we are happy to help guide you through the process of determining which mattress brand and model would be best for both of you. Please keep in mind that, should it for some reason not work well for you, we offer a full 365-night sleep trial, during which we can customize the mattress to properly suit your needs at no cost whatsoever. Our factory is connected to Ultrabed Mattress, the largest showroom in America, and we even offer free exchanges, whereby you can select a totally different brand, such as Stearns & Foster or many others. If we cannot solve your issue, we then allow a full return of the mattress, with no restocking fees whatsoever.

Thank you Dr Rick and everyone who chimed in for your detailed answers. Me and my wife went and tried the i10 and we both didn’t like the gel like top. After laying on a bunch of mattress the one we both liked was the temperpedic luxe adapt medium. The firm was to hard for both of us. I have read on another post that temp flow is in the process of designing a mattress that is very similar. Is there an eta on when that will be available. Also what would be the difference between the Tempflow and the temperpedic luxe adapt medium. We liked the memory foam feel vs gel. Thanks for the reply.
I apologize, but it looks like I missed your last response. It’s great that you and your wife were able to try out mattresses and find a feel you both like! That’s a crucial step in the process. Since you’re leaning towards a Tempur-Pedic feel and are interested in Tempflow, I have a great solution for you.
You’re correct that we are adding that medium to our line soon, but even so, with the fact that you liked the Tempur-Pedic Luxe Adapt line, but will require more back support that that will give, we have customized Tempflow mattresses with our Lumbar-Flex back support zoning and we can get you the comparable feel you are looking for, since we already have the formulation for that model. Additionally, we can use our GripLock modular cover system, so should for some reason you not feel like it is the perfect fit for your needs, we can modify it to suit your firmness preferences and there is no cost whatsoever to do so.
If you want to discuss it further, you can feel free to email us or give us a call and I will be happy to go over these and more options personally with you.
Thanks!
Rick
