Mattresses in the $600-700 range for movement isolation

I’m a heavy guy that moves a lot when I sleep and my wife is neither. Our current mattress is a solid 10 years old and a cheaper continuous coil type standard mattress that is starting to cause me hip pain (I’m 46, shouldn’t be having hip pain lol).

I am a cabinet maker and will be building a flat platform for this so we won’t need a box spring.

Also I don’t like sleeping hot. So, since I’m actively moving and hate being hot, I assume I need to avoid memory foam. Also, I have read many accounts that memory foam is lousy for sex, and being a heavy guy that’s probably going to make it a double fail lol.

I’ve considered purchasing a mid range pocket coil mattress and topping it with a 2" latex topper. I don’t mind putting the full budget into the mattress and adding the foam topper later if we decide we need it

Mattress size is a queen.

Hi @BadGaskets - I would recommend our Today Mattress (even though it does have 1" of Memory Foam). Here is why:

  • It is in your budget
  • Even though it has 1" of Memory Foam quilted into the top fabric it does not have a Memory Foam feel at all. The 6" Pocketed Coil and the 1.5" Foam layer give it plenty of “bounce”
  • We have several 250 - 300lb + individuals on this mattress that love it.
  • It is in the Medium-Firm range at about a 7/10. So has some softness/give, but also has good support.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Great to hear that you are going to build your own platform—we’d always recommend over-engineering and over-building it to make it as sturdy as the floor.

Keep in mind that mattress size matters when it comes to sleeping warmer. Couples tend to sleep warmer on a queen-size mattress than on a king because there’s more space to move away from the heat source—your partner. If you have the space in the room, it might be worth considering a king size mattress.

The idea that memory foam is bad for sex and sleeping hot isn’t always true; it depends on how it’s used in the mattress. However, it sounds like you’re interested in starting with a well-built mattress and potentially adding a topper later. This is a great approach, as you can experiment with a memory foam topper without committing to it as part of the mattress from the start.

A topper is often thought of as a fix, but it can also be a great option for customizing the feel and adjusting the comfort level.

Since you’re a big guy, we’d recommend a two-sided mattress that you can flip and rotate to even out the wear. If you’re looking to go this route with a topper, we might suggest the DLX Essential, a well-built, two-sided mattress that you can flip and rotate to even out the wear. It features 1.5" of 1.8 lb foam on both sides, aligning with the “less is more” concept—a great option if you want to added a topper.

Since you mentioned motion, our Essential uses an 8" pocket coil system. We can even customize it for you with a 6" pocket coil system can have slightly less motion transfer—shorter coils tend to sway less. Coming from an open-coil continuous spring mattress, you should see an improvement when switching to a pocket coil design.

Let me know if you have any questions or want more details about our mattress. We’re happy to help!

t sounds like you’re looking for a mattress that can provide good support and keep you cool, especially since you’re a heavier guy who moves around a lot in your sleep. And you’re right, traditional memory foam might not be the best fit for your needs – it can sometimes trap heat and may not offer the best support for active sleepers.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic and mattress designer, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to create mattresses that provide the right balance of comfort, support, and temperature regulation. And I think one of my mattress brands, Back Science, might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Here’s why I think the Back Science Essentials mattress could be a great fit for you:

  • Strong Support, No Sagging: The Essentials mattress uses high-density foams and a durable base layer to provide excellent support, even for heavier individuals. This means you can say goodbye to that sinking feeling and those aches and pains you’ve been experiencing with your old mattress.
  • Cool and Comfortable: The Essentials mattress incorporates breathable materials and a layer of Hypergel-infused foam to promote airflow and regulate temperature. This will help you stay cool and comfortable throughout the night, even if you tend to sleep hot.
  • Perfect for Active Sleepers: The responsive foams used in the Essentials mattress will contour to your body while still providing a stable and supportive surface. This means you can move freely throughout the night without feeling stuck or restricted.
  • Great Value: The Back Science Essentials mattress is great for those on a budget. You’ll get premium quality and support without breaking the bank.

And since you’re building a flat platform, you won’t need a box spring, which can save you even more money.

I know you mentioned considering a latex topper. While that’s certainly an option, I think you’ll find that the Essentials mattress provides a great balance of comfort and support on its own. But if you do decide you want a topper later on, you can always add one.

The best way to know for sure is to try it out! Back Science offers a generous sleep trial, so you can experience the mattress in your own home and see if it’s the right fit for you and your wife.

Check out the Back Science Essentials mattress online at www.backscience.com, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. You can always reach us at 800-667-1969.

I hope this helps!
