My husband and I have owned the gambit of mattresses over the years and are now ready for a new mattress. Traditional coil mattresses were ok for one of us but not the other. Memory foam was extremely hot sleeping … especially as I approach menopause. As I was starting my research, I came across TMU and immediately followed Phoenix’s advice to read the background info.
We both had latex in the back of our minds but evaluating our own personal value equation, we were unsure which way to turn for a mattress that would meet our needs. Do we order off the internet (what I do for literally everything in our home) or try to find a small local mattress shop where I believed we’d pay more but would definitely benefit from one on one consultation.
My husband’s BMI is 32 and mine is 35. We’ve both been unable to exercise for the last 3 years due initially to a life threatening event for each of us and the subsequent sequelae of such an event: including depression and weight gain. Shortly afterward we both developed lumbar pain.
I doubt seriously that any 1 thing caused our lumbar pain. My suspicions are high that it was a combination of our single-sided pillow top mattress degrading and its inability to provide adequate support nor any comfort AND the amount of weight we each had gained. Treating patients myself, I was loath to use any “pain medications” or Opioids if I could help it. My husband feels the same. Last year I had a spinal cord stimulator implanted in my back and it has been a life-saver! I can work, stand on my feet for long hours, and exercise with very little discomfort. Sleeping, however, is another story. I have to turn the simulator way down to not notice the stimulations and be able to fall asleep. My husband and I now are often up together at 3 or 4 am unable to sleep. We’ve tried our guest bedroom and the couch without success.
Now we are highly motivated to make changes and the first is the mattress that most of us spend 1/3 of our lives in (based on sleeping 8 hrs/night). I’ve learned much on TMU … and am grateful for everyone’s insights.
My first question: given our current BMIs, our sleeping patterns (both start on back but wind up on our sides), and my husband’s multiple allergies (he did not like the smell of memory foam) …is it reasonable to consider the following configuration?
A 12 inch mattress with
- 6 inch 100% Dunlop latex Support Core
- 3 inch split layer (my side Medium firm
100% Dunlop and his side Firm) - 2 inch layer of sculpted Dunlop
- 1 inch wool stitched to the outer woven cotton layer on both top and bottom creating a flipable mattress.
I believe I’ve found a good choice at a smaller manufacturer that I didn’t know existed until reading some of the posts on this site. They just happen to be only 10 miles away which made “sleep trials” convenient. I am grateful for the postings of several consumer members about their experiences with Cozy Pure and even their follow up a year or more later to share how their choice was holding up.
Both Hans and Susan have been very informative and I believe honest. I made no bones about being overweight at the current time and needing their expertise to guide us.
My only dilemma comes from the fact that we really haven’t tried a true latex mattress from any other company. I felt so comfortable with the Cozy Pure staff, their mattress quality, and their reputation that I had stopped my line of inquires elsewhere. Am I selling us short by not calling other companies?[quote]
