Modern Mattresses Suck - Help Me Find A New One Plz

Hey guys. I’m looking for a new bed. I’m used to beds lasting 20 years. This new crap with the foam has me hurting and isn’t good for marital relations. Just left Mattress Firm - they want 3K for a Sterns and Foster bed that I head will sag after the four month period. I can buy a used car with 3K!!!

That’s not even covering 500 for the box spring (which they don’t even make like they used to!!!)

I want a extra firm king sized bed, preferably flippable like the old days, that can hold up to a vigorous workout and sleep with two people with a combined weight of 500 for at least 5 years. Any suggestions.

PS - it seems Queen sized beds are a hell of a lot smaller than they used to be.

Hey there HellUpInHarlem,

You wont get an argument from me regarding your thoughts about your recent experience. If you are looking for a mattress that will last 5 years that is an extra firm mattress, you have come to the right place. I wont even begin to list some of our Trusted Members here, because just about every one could make that happen.

Mattresses, like any other product you buy, come in different quality levels. Not only are the quality of the materials different, so are the folks who sell them. When you collaborate with a Trusted Member here, or even an outside manufacturer, like Shifman, Custom Comfort, and even a few Bed in a Box online sellers, you can accomplish your goal.

Some will be over 2k, some over 3k, but there will be quite a few that will be between 1k -2k. When a manufacturer uses quality products, listens to their client/customer, works with them, you will be very surprised at what they can produce.

As far as the queen sized mattress, a queen is a queen, 80"x60". Ranging in heights up to 18".

I would say, choose a Trusted Member, give them your vitals. Height, weight, sleep position, what you hated and what you have loved so far or in the past. In less than two weeks, you will be sleeping soundly at home.

We make a traditional two-sided mattress called the DLX Classic. We offer a firm version in the 12" model, though we wouldn’t classify it as extra firm due to the use of a pocket coil. However, we can create an extra firm version as a custom option for you. This extra firm option in the 12" model would feel firmer than the standard Firm version, but it won’t be as firm as an open coil innerspring. The stiff rigidity of an open coil provides a much firmer feel than any pocket coil available.

Please keep in mind that the support underneath the mattress can affect its overall feel and support. The stronger and sturdier the base, the firmer the mattress will feel.

Regarding queen-size mattresses being smaller than they used to be, I’d love to hear more about that and am happy to provide some context. We’ve been making mattresses for a while and haven’t noticed any trends in that direction. However, with a bit more context, we might be able to provide reasons for any discrepancies and advise on how to avoid this issue in future purchases.

I can understand why it would seem on the surface that a flippable mattress would make it last longer, since with each flip, it seems to renew the mattress feel. The problem comes from the fact that in order for the mattress to be flippable, it has to have a soft side on both sides of the mattress, which means that there is always a soft spot under your mattress. That is why it seems like each flip renews the mattress feel, but then after a couple of weeks, the mattress starts to sag again as it settles into the softer spot below.

With that said, I also understand your concern about price and while there are many choices out there that can fit your budget, thanks to lower tier mattress prices from many of the bed-in-the-box manufacturers, I would like to introduce you to Back Science, since the Series 1 does seem to fit perfectly with your request in terms of budget, firmness and longevity (Only 3/4 inch sag requirement as opposed to the industry 1.5 inch requirement). You can take a look at the site to read more about Back Science Series1 mattress, but feel free to respond to this post or call us directly at 800 667-1969 if you have any questions whatsoever and if you do purchase a Back Science mattress, be sure to use the 10% off discount we give to Mattress Underground members by using the code: TMIU10.
