The Monhegan Talalay Natural from Portland Mattress Makers sounds like it could be a well built mattress. I use these words with a bit of caution. I was trying to find the specs on their website and it seems they are no where to be found. From a personal perspective, I prefer when a company is right up front with this information. Perhaps a phone call could clear it all up as you seemed to have this information.
The core of this mattress features a 6-inch layer of 100% natural Talalay latex, and has a firmness rating of 36 ILD.
This rating is generally considered on the firmer side, often categorized as extra firm by some manufacturers. However, the overall firmness perception can be influenced by the mattress’s construction.
The Monhegan mattress includes two layers of Joma wool quilted with cotton, which can add some cushioning and slightly soften the feel of the latex core. This means that despite the high ILD rating, the mattress may not feel as firm as the ILD suggests due to these additional layers.
Conversely, the mattress is 8 inches thick, so the cushioning layers are not very deep, which means the firmness of the latex core will be more prominent.
The way the firmness feels can also vary depending on factors such as your weight, height and sleeping position.
Upon perusing their web-site, I must admit it is a bit disappointing. I will acknowledge their reviews on their web-site are stellar, but so is just about every other website’s reviews on the planet.
I am not certain what leads you to believe this would be a medium mattress as they clearly say on their website it is a medium-firm. Based on the 36ILD and only 1" of natural fibers on either side, my guess the medium firm is closer to the firm side.
The Monhegan-Talalay mattress is another one of our 100% Natural Mattresses. Made with Latex manufactured in the Talalay process for a comfortable, consistent feel. Unlike our other Monhegan Mattresses which come in different firmness options this model is only available in a medium firm comfort level.
While it may be a very nice mattress, you need to sleep on it for a good month or two so you can really evaluate comfort for yourself. You should be clear about their 4R’s (Return, Refund, Restocking Fee, and Reputation based on individual off site reviews.) I read what their web-site describes as their refund/return policy, and perhaps 60 days may be a sufficient amount of time to evaluate the mattress. If it is too firm, you can always add a talalay topper of a lower ILD to soften it a bit. In any case, as a small independent business, trial periods are negotiable and you should push that trial to 90 days.
I understand if this approach seems cautious, but it’s based on the information available and presented. Located in New England, I will go out on a limb and guess that they are using Talalay Global latex. You may want to verify that as Talalay Global manufacturers some of the finest Talalay Latex in the world with Vita Talalay in The Netherlands being the other premier Talalay manufacturer.I
I wish you success in your mattress journey and keep us posted on how things work out.
