My first latex Matress - Please help!

Hello all,

I’ve been lurking around for quite some time, reading the information available, feeling a bit overwhelming at times, so many types, numbers, and calculations.
Im 38 years old, 5’11 and 210 lbs. I tend to move quite a bit during sleep, and sleep on the side or on the stomach and rarely on my back.
Finally…last week I made the plunge and purchased a 100% latex mattress online, from one of the forum members, a king Maoli 6" inch firm mattress from Memory Foam Comfort. Its made of a 4" firm core, ILD of 40 and 2" Soft layer ILD of 20. I have a bed with a full wooden base to support the mattress, with leg support underneath every 10-15 inches or so.
Talking to Mario prior the purchase, I tried a similar product from one of the large retailers in Montreal, QC - Matelas la Bonheur. The medium firm felt too plush as I really dont like the sink sensation and prefer something with good support. I thought going with a 6 Inch firm mattress would be the good choice.

Finally got the mattress a few days ago…at first it felt good, but a few hours into the night I woke in pain, very sore, pain sensation…on the ribs, or when sleeping on the side very sore on the shoulder and hip. It felt like I was touching the wood base.

I felt very sad…disappointed, Im on a tight budget and invested all my budget in this 1500$ mattress that I cant even sleep on. Unfortunately, MFC would not accept any returns…and Mario suggest getting a topper for additional support.

Looking at toppers, again there are a lot of choices…and not sure what I should get. I would like to stay with the 100% latex…but not sure if i should go for the 2" soft topper or maybe should take a firm or medium and use to add it under the mattress.

Would appreciate any advice…on what I could/should do next.

thank you in advance!!

Hello P19

Thank you for your inquiry. You are almost exactly my size and weight (I am 200lbs 5’10"), so I am able to offer you first-hand information as to what maybe going on with your mattress. I am currently sleeping on 9" of latex, with a configuration of 3" Medium (30-32ILD) over 3" Medium (30-32ILD) over 3" Firm (38-40ILD). Prior to landing on this configuration I did try soft Talalay (19-20ILD) in both the 2" and 3" and neither worked at all for me. I simply pushed right thru the 2" layer to my support cores, and therefore would wake up with pressure points, as well as back pains. I believe this is what is happening to you. ILD’s under 24 are usually too soft for someone over 200lbs, and can be deceptive base on you waking up with pressure point pains (again, which is due to your body pushing right through to your support core).
I fear that if you add a topper to this configuration, although it may alleviate your pressure point pains, your back pain may get even worse. Your top contour layer should be a medium density (28 to 32ILD), which is an ideal contour layer for most people that are primarily side to back sleepers that weigh 185lbs and over. If you are able to remove your soft layer and replace it with a medium layer, this would allow your body proper contour at your weight, and not push directly to your support core (which should alleviate your pressure point problems at the shoulders and hips).

Hi there,

thank you so much for your response. This make so much sense…I understand it now…

I just checked the mattress, unfortunately the two layers seemed to be glued together and there is no easy way to separate them. I will check back to seller but his initial response was that…under no circumstances he would accept back the mattress as he says …this is now “used”.

Do happen to know what would happen if i would add the 3inch medium layer on top of the soft one? would it damage the mattress?

Hello P19

Thank you for calling my office and speaking with me yesterday about your mattress! Please feel free to do so again anytime!

As discussed in our phone conversation yesterday, adding a topper to your mattress may create an even softer overall feel to your mattress surface. If decide to try this, SleepEZ offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on our toppers. This will allow you 90 days to try the topper out to see if it will work for you. If you would like to order, or have more questions, please feel free to call 480-966-8731.

Thanks again, we look forward to hearing from you!
