After my failed mattress trials, reading through the answers to all my questions on this forum and two others, getting sample boxes to feel the latex toppers/layers, buying a latex topper, and finally feeling a latex core I think I’ve narrowed down what components I want to go with.
Now I just want some opinions on the firmness level for the core, if I should add another transition layer, and the transition piece(s) firmness:
I’m leaning towards start at 12" and decide if I need another layer later. But both 12" and 15" build suggestions would be appreciated!
Cover wise I’m going with the DIY mattress .net cotton one because it’s the only one I’ve found without wool which means being able to feel the latex better
I currently have a 3" soft Talalay topper from Sleep EZ on top of a hybrid mattress. King. I love the topper. Once again hate pocket coils.
And I really like being able to feel the latex. I have a deep pocket mattress encasement over it all. The latex make it feel marshmallowy lol.
Currently makes my bed 15" tall (actually like 15.5). Realized I’d prefer it a little shorter but if needed to perfect my build 15" component height is my max (I get the cover will add an inch making it 16)
The topper only moved when I moved the mattress to assemble the frame (had to lean it against the wall) but it doesn’t move at all sleeping on it so if I decide to do 15" later on I’m thinking a 12" cover and one layer will essentially be a topper. But if I go 15" from the get go DIY Mattress .net does have 15" cover option
I really appreciated LMF’s offer of if I went with their cover or EZ’s to ship the cover back to be altered to 15", just pay shipping. But I like the idea of going with a no wool option to feel the latex better
Core wise I’m set on 6" blended Talalay. Hate pocket coils and concerned about sinking/longevity going with Polyfoam.
I still don’t like that you have to get 2 Twin XLs for a King so I’m gonna take one of the suggestions here and ask if they’ll glue them together for me. If not I appreciated the assurance that no one complains about a split feeling
Q1. Do I go medium or firm for the 6" blended talalay core?
***I want to use my 3" soft Talalay topper from Sleep EZ in my build probably on top. Both from a ‘I love this topper’ and cost perspective.
Q2. I was thinking of going with the 3" medium talalay layer from LMF as the transition between core and topper. Thoughts?
Q3. If I need another transition layer, what would I use?
Note: IF I use another transition layer (suggestions have been soft or medium Dunlop but that was with coils as base so idk) I’d order through LMF or Sleep EZ
My concern as stated before are platform frames firming up a mattress so I’m building a bit softer to combat that.
240 lb (and in a weight loss journey if that matters but it is part of my maybe add layer later thought), 5’2". Side sleeper. Prefers: Soft/plush feel. Can’t stand firm
160 lb part time bed partner. 5’9". Mostly side & tummyish sleeper. Can sleep on literally anything said build to my preference.
